Best place to sell old laptop - Apple recycle?

I'm just planning to purchase a Macbook Pro and I'm looking at getting rid of my old laptop (which may well break down any time now) - HP Pavilion dv6000 which I have had for almost five years now. I'm thinking about trading it for the Apple recycling programme (as by the look of things they would offer me the best price), does anybody know if I can do it anytime or only when I buy a new Mac?
Also, if anybody could recommend any places to trade in an old laptop, I would be really grateful! Many thanks.
