Earned £40 more this month, was taxed an extra £48. What am I missing?

As per thread title, I earned an additional ~£40 this month due to some overtime/bonuses, yet I paid an additional ~£48 in income tax (and an extra £3 in NI).

I have a number of deductions, and added another this month to the value of £23, but can't see this having a major effect.

I'm paid 4 weekly, and due to a number of deductions etc, I can't find a decent online tax calculator. Any ideas?

What figures have you earned this year? I'm wondering if last month even though you only earned £40 more you were able to use up previous months tax free allowance, whereas this month you were taxed 'normally' as your earning have caught up with your tax free amount.

Hope this makes sense. This may have happened if you have increased your hours in the last few months or maybe you weren't working at all earlier in the tax year.

Adding the figures from your last two payslips and your total taxable income for the year will help answer your question.

Other explanations may be that your earnings for earlier took you into the 40% band and your average then dropped to give a period when you were getting some of this tax back and this has now finished, or there has been a change to your tax code or basis. But to know the answer as has been said you have to give full details. Gross and tax along with tax code and basis from last three payslips along with gross to date and tax to date from the last payslip.

Forget about tax calculators this will proberbly be one of the occasions when they cannot be used.
