My employer made us change to self employed in August 2012[to dodge the new pension regulations]Since I have always earned over £8000 p.a.[part time] I started paying class 2 N.I. payments. But my work suddenly dried up and I doubt I will make £5595 this tax year. Will I be able to reclaim payments back and as I have over 30 years qualifying years so far are all my future pension and other benefits completely secure if I never pay n.i .again?

Here's the HMRC page listing the circumstances where NI can be reclaimed, i don't know if your case is one of them http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/refunds-complaints/claimback.htm
Surely you should be more concerned that your employer has 'made' you become self-employed - the employer cannot pick and choose whether workers are employees of self employed, the circumstances of the job dictate that. If the work has not changed then you are still employed and the employer is responsible for paying employers NI, and collecting and handing over any income tax and employees NI due.0 -
Thanx.I have already discussed on earlier posts and contacted HMRC concerning being self employed.havent got anywhere with that yet and also lost 10% statury holiday pay off my income0

Have you seen the proposals for the new simplified state pension? Looks like you may need 35 years service, and paying the class 2 is a very cheap way of buying an extra year.0

Yes thanx noticed that.I started working at 16 and have worked out I have paid N.I for more than 35 years of my life so far.,and I have 8 years to go before retirement..Though I could afford not to work from age 60.Though looking things up I notice that N.I. starts from age 19, though I will still scrape in the 35 years. But I think I will send for a statement just in case.0
