I've been selling quite a lot of random stuff on eBay recently after a clear out. I found the original 90s Polly Pockets and vintage 80s board games sold well. I had a full set of original monopoly money, community chest and chance cards which sold for almost £20!
  • when comet closed down i got some £100 panasonic TV stands for £5 each flogged them on ebay for £60 each other than that i havnt made money on ebay for years after they straightend up and it became harder to sell replicas on there
  • It really depends. I've had some lovely things go for 99p or not sell at all, and made surprisingly good money on other stuff. My most recent successes are:

    - A Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser, bought on eBay for £1.04 about 6 months ago, sold for nearly £20.
    - The parcel shelf out of my old car, over £10
    - A metronome, that I didn't realise was worth much, £14
    - My daughter's first car seat, £41 (after not selling the previous week with a starting price of £30)
    - A BNWT t-shirt that cost £2, sold for £3.50
    - A thermal binder bought from Lidl/Aldi a few years ago, went for over £10 (about what I paid for it).

Other things though you just can't give away. Clothes can take a while to shift. As long as you don't mind putting it on as a 99p start price (so free listing), just keep re-listing each week. I've finally got rid of a skirt that has been on half a dozen times.

Some days it does feel like the buyers have awful taste, paying quite a bit for the naff present you wouldn't insult the charity shop with, and ignoring something you thought was lovely. One man's rubbish....

  • Early Learning Centre Happy Land toys go for good money too, especially the ones they don't make any more, but I'm still buying those rather than selling ;)

  • I think the best thing to do with eBay is find something your enjoy or have a knowledge with and do some research in that area. Although I do not do a lot of eBay now years ago I used to scour for disney Polly pocket sets and the like after researching. Used to pick the up for £1 and sell for up to £25! Best thing to do is when you find an item to sell type in the item and go to completed items and highest first. This way you can make sure you get the right description in title and list in the right section, this along with good photographs can sometimes double and triple your profit on an item.

I've found with eBay that you can never be 100 percent sure what will fly out and what will stick.

I've been selling off pairs of shoes I no longer wear, and before Christmas they got huge amounts of watchers and bidders, and went for prices I was really pleased with. But the shoe market seems to have stalled. This weeks pair of shoes just had one bidder and sold at the opening price of £2.99

I've found that vintage costume jewellery is popular. I sold off my mum's pieces of jewellery and they proved to be very popular.

Anything a bit vintage from 50's 60's and 70's seems to do well. My parents had a Watneys Red Barrel keying that went for £12, which I thought was quite good.

But you can never be sure of the price you'll get. I'm selling off my collection of 7 inch singles at the moment. This weeks batch went for nearly three times the price of a similar batch last week.

I had my best and most astonishing success with a pile of jigsaws! Couldn't believe how popular they were.

Other than that, my second best successes were with M&S clothing, sizes 14 and 16 (stuff that had belonged to my mother and was in perfect condition - some of it unworn).

Those jigsaws weren't Good Companion ones from the 50's and 60's were they?

If so I bought a couple of nautical ones, and was very pleased. I'm keeping them for another 20 years or so to be eBay sales of the future!

  • Like others Im intrigued at what sells and what doesn't.Ive had similar experiences on Freecycle...some things you cant give away and others you have a queue.Having sold on ebay over the years anything old and in good or better condition generally finds a buyer.Similarly new with tags generally goes.It is an auction and Ive found a number of times things sell after a number of listings and at least twice Ive relisted at a higher price and got it. Best of all is if you have a collectable type item and two bidders are interested.
Theres no magic formula and as others have said if I find one i'm sorry I won't share it!

I have found that some things will not sell then go for £10's the next time, no special theory, just a case of the right buyers being on ebay at the right time.

Seasonal things sometimes sell better 'out of season' I sold some summer clothes in November, probably because the shops were full of winter clothes and people were going away for winter holidays. Also some things sell great just before the season when peoples minds start thinking about events and then you can get things listed before the masses start posting.
  • Thanks for the replies folk.

I ebayed some things recently that have been listed before and they sold for more than expected, with loads of bidders yet hadn't sold time and time again previously.

Got a lot to list but waiting for the next free listing weekend - missed this one gone.

    Thanks again - interesting reads
