In answer to your question about how can builders sell these houses, it's simply because people buy them - they love new houses and seem to completely overlook the lack of space they are buying - dazzled by the schemes open to them that 'help' them out.....

If people didn't build these shoeboxes then the builder would be forced to build decent homes instead.... Then again, with Newbuy etc the Government is actively encouraging people to buy these types of houses over ones which are older and infinately more suitable, with rooms for families by having decent sized rooms and gardens.

The Newbuy is not intended to help new buyers. It is a scheme to encourage employment in the building industry. That said, the Government cannot be seen to be doing this. Intervention is not PC, market forces must be said to control matters and no kneejerk reactions from Ministers. Hence, Newbuy.

The other garage was storage for my Dad's precious treasures; half dried up tins of paint, boxes of nails, broken toys, the old hamster cage etc. The car lived outside.

You missed out the 4 bikes, 4 sets of golf clubs umpteen pairs of boots, old trainers....:p

There have been 40 posts on this thread (as I type) ... now over 60, and other than one mentioning the size of one room not one has mentioned the size in square feet or meters of an house or flat.
In Luxembourg (where I live) and much of the rest of Europe all property's are advertised with not only a description but the square meters of living space and the plot size if it is a house.
While this important information is rarely considered in the UK you may be getting the houses and flats and plot sizes you deserve.

Very good point. I don't know why this has never been done in the UK. It would certainly highlight how little in terms of £1000 per square metres people are getting, and provide a better comparison between new build and older properties.

The board of Barratts would have a fit, as would some London (and Aberdeen) estate agents.

That's true actually, all the people from the US I know talk about their house in square footage terms.

So perhaps when buying or selling property in future you should insist on knowing the floor and plot size.
Estate agents and developers need to be squeezed to provide this naturally.

I've bought a number of newbuilds, and developers seem quite obsessed with square footage. I've seen many plot lists with bedrooms, type, square footage and price being the only items.

But I don't think most people in this country think of their homes in that way. FWIW, my newbuild house is about 1375 sq ft.

I'm not sure developers are obsessed with area - in my experience they only tell you when asked. 1375 sq ft is quite a lot for a new build, round here that would be a 5 bedroom house but the bedrooms themselves would be tiny.

I agree though - people dont think about their houses like this but perhaps they should.

Perhaps it's because I've bought mostly in London. I've seen the plot lists, and even had sales people talk about square footage without prompting - usually to differentiate otherwise similar properties. ie. to justify a difference in price.

I did buy the property partly for its size, but it isn't the first time that I've been able to do that in London & the SE.

I had a 1-bed flat previously that was 750 sq ft.
