I saw this score on one of the 2011/12 forums. Support thread for parents of children sitting the transfer test in 2011 - page 18.

Tried to send link but won't let me as I'm a new user.

It's definitely a good percentage to achieve and I was also amaze :(d at the score of 102.
Thanks for replying to my post, it's been so quiet on these forums lately.:)

I saw the post you were looking at. The poster didn't give any numbers so we only have their word for it that they calculated the percentage correctly. Frankly, I can't believe that an October child getting 86% wouldn't be in the 120s. 86% is a huge score. The top kids in my daughters class get that. My child gets in the 70s and should get an A/ 107+ as she has a June birthday. There are small differences between each month.
There is an interesting illustration on transfer tests here. You can see that 6 months age difference is approx 4 marks for the same raw mark, so not radical. The inference is that the average raw mark is above 80% which I strongly doubt.

I don't think you can compare results from year to year...
The "marks" are more like scores in an IQ test as they standardize them to the average test results.

My DS is now approaching his 3rd year at the grammar. School practice tests, he had scores between 88 and 100%. Actual raw scores were 92% over the best two tests. Aqe score 118, with a February birth...
But take another kid in a different year with similar scores, and birth date? I wouldn't predict that they would get the same AQE result. It depends on how everyone else scores.

I know that the raw mark averages etc will change depending on the year the test is completed. A raw score of 86% for a standardised score of 102 seems very odd. It suggests an average raw mark for that age set of about 83%. That may be the case, I don't know. Perhaps we'll find that 75% or whatever is not enough to get a wide choice.
If dd gets above 90 she'll get into a grammar school. The local secondary is going through a challenging time and she'd find it a tough environment, although they are getting a new Head who will hopefully bring some discipline and raise staff morale.

I just had a look at past threads and the raw marks are high generally. Time to chase daughter to do her summer homework!

lol. When I was reading over the past scores I also thought my son needed to revise ...ASAP. It's been hard to find the motivation as the weather has been superb this summer. He's been sitting one test per week but careless mistakes seem to appear frequently. Our primary school sit three tests per week which will be an enormous help. Almost can't wait for him to start back to school to get this whole process over and done with.

my sons scores over last summer were dropping so badly that I seriously considered pulling him out of the test. After advice from the primary school about this being a common occurrence for some children I kept him at it. By October he had pulled himself back up and is now starting Grammar school in a few weeks.

Motivating boys is particularly difficult, my daughter was the opposite so don't panic just yet!!

Good luck to you all because if I had any more children I couldn't cope with that again lol. Its a long hard road but hopefully worth it in the end.:T

Our school said that the scores will drop in September but they will rally and the teachers organise the preparation so that the children peak in November. The school were quite anti tutor. They advised getting someone with P7 teaching experience but said that the children don't need tutoring as the school preparation is so intensive.

i I popped into Easons today to buy some comprehension booklets for DS as he is still struggling with them. I spotted some tests by PTQ Quinn called CEA Practice Tests.and was wondering if anyone had been using them. If so, would you recommend them. I've been using PMP papers, but have only two papers left, so I'd like to buy some more. How is everyone getting on with revision etc at the moment. DS is still stuck at 86 per cent which is great but i'm still concerned it wouldn't be enough for our choice of schools. We live in Lisburn only 5 minutes away from Friends and Wallace, so they are the most obvious choice if schools, but as I mention earlier, I'm concerned as to whether 86 per cent with October birthday is sufficient as 106 appears to be their lowest acceptance score, but I've been reliably informed that Friends have only accepted a handful of children in the 106-110 band with majority of children being accepted with scores higher than 110.
How is everyone else getting on with revision?
  • Reverting back to the raw scores v AQE score debate - I just wanted to say that I obtained my child's scores from AQE for last year's test - the best 2 tests gave her a raw score of 75% and this gave her an AQE mark of 96 - so this year I reckon that around high 70's to 80% would have given an AQE score of 100. It all changes from year to year though as you all know. It was enough to get into her first choice grammar and that was the main thing so we're all happy.
