Who qualifies as a dependent for mortgage purposes?

One of the questions on the mortgage application is: "How many dependents do you have?". The question didnt ask about the number of children. Thus, although, I have two children under 18, I have said 'none',as they do not live me; neither do they rely on me wholly or substantially for their basic needs. I do, however, give money to their mother monthly.

Any thoughts?

Are you putting down the money you pay the mother as maintenance?
I think if you do that you should be safe - otherwise your effectively counting it twice, maintenance and a dependent.

But if you prefer to make sure then as Andy says, give the lender a quick call to ask.

No dependants but you need to declare the monthly amount of maintenance as a commitment

I would fill the form in as suggested and send a brief covering letter to explain what I had done. I would not ask.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
