Martin Isark of CanIEatIr has tasted his way through loads of the cheapest foods in Britain and named and shamed the worst.

Do you agree with him or he has he slated things you like ?

Oh and before anyone asks I was reading some gossip on DM shock horror and spotted the article and thought it might be of interest to others and yeah though I eat organic mostly I do buy additive free in Lidl when I find it.

I think it's a case of trying things out and if you like them stick with them or if you don't like them then don't buy them again.

I think a lot of value items are good, but they can vary from one supermarket to another e.g I usually buy Tesco porridge oats but this time decided to buy them from Asda as they were slightly cheaper and yes I have to agree with Martin Isark, they are not as nice as the Tesco ones... But I think it is also down to individual taste..I bet he wouldn't like Tesco's value porridge oats either

he is rating purely on a subjective taste.
Not on how filling they are or nutritional value.

this is number 3 on his 'best of the cheapies' list -

Waitrose Duchy Originals Organic Christmas Pudding, 454g, £7.99 - 10/10.

It is organic & it's a Duchy Original but i think a lot of people will still think that 7.99 for a Christmas pudding is not cheap.

I agree with him about the LIDL cashew nuts, they're lovely.
  • The DM seems to be trying to make this into a bigger story than it is.
They say he has tasted 100,000 own brand products which took him over 20 years to do so recipes will inevitably of changed on many items meaning they now taste completely different.
Out of these 100,000 products they say only 11 are considered best left on the shelf. If there are only 11 out of 100,000 products that are not suited to his personal taste then it sounds like the supermarkets are doing pretty well with own brands for him at least.

Well I use Sainsburys Basic tea bags and at 28p a box they are brilliant
  • How much do they pay these "experts" to come up with their findings I wonder? Whatever it is I think it's a waste of money! Everyone has different tastes and I for one prefer to make my own mind up over whatever I eat. If I buy something, find I don't like it, then I don't buy it again - simple!

I use Asda Smartprice oats - oats are oats IMO. They do the job! And really, all porridge is pretty much 'tasteless sludge' unless you add some flavouring lol.

When I lived at home, my Mum only bought branded foods so when I moved out, it was a shock to the system! A bit of trial and error has helped along the way. I've found ASDA basic ranges really horrible & cheap while Sainsburys and Tesco are better; so much better infact that I have converted to Tesco and most items in my basket were Everyday Essentials.

I can't imagine ever buying McVities biscuits, Robinsons fruit squash ever again.
Now I am employed, lets get rid of this student debt! :D:D

I prefer to make my own mind up. The cashews he describes as the best in the world are far too salty for my taste & nowhere near as fresh as the ones you find in most asian food shops.
