A lot of the ATM's in university and around these area's allow £5 withdrawals.

    I know barclays ones do
  • Definitely in Student areas they do but not generally in the city's around them!

Fivers circulate (and therefore get tatty) so quickly, that there aren't actually that many of them around good enough for the paper handling equipment in ATM's to work with reliably. It's like trying to use your printer with screwed-up and flattened paper.

I had certainly heard that ATMs in Student Unions and the like were loaded with £5 and £10 rather than £10 and £20 - but this might be outdated advice.

If you know you are going to need the last £5 or so, then there are normally other routes like withdrawing the money over the post office or branch counter (depending on your bank).

I've had £5 notes out of an ATM before, but only as part of a larger withdrawal.

Interesting one - can't remember when I last had a fiver from an ATM. Any local shops/mini-marts do cashback (although you'd have to buy something).
