Hi People,

New to the forum, I am in debt at the moment with various payday loans, overdrafts and pay day loans as stupid as I am, after losing my job I couldn't repay and decided to go credit on credit, as I got a new job it spiralled out of control, I am currently with StepChange, formally known as CCCS. They said I would need a basic bank account as when my Lloyds TSB account will go on my DMP it will be closed, I have applied for a Co-Op cash account = no luck, Barclays cash account = no luck, NatWest = no luck and also HSBC = no luck.

I feel so stressed and it is affecting me in my personal life and at work, I want to get things up and running but I just feel I can't move out of this situation. :(

Any advice people would be appreciated.

The is a very simply answer

go to your local building society and get a passbook or cash card account

From the likes of Yorkshire BS/Derbyshire/Coventry/Nationwide

Plenty to choose from and you will get the account opened there and then.

No credit checks etc, just take id with you next week
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.

You are a star!, its just Barclays initially offered me one sent me the card then closed it, got a HSBC card today and another letter that I opened next saying its closed, they should really fix up and do there initial checks first!

You could have a CIFAS marking against your name or something on your credit file worth checking out

However a building society account wont be affected by this (only those that are not credit accounts)

So the Yorkshire Cash transactor will be fine:

    http://www.ybs.co.uk/savings/easy_access/cash_transactor.html

    http://www.thederbyshire.co.uk/savings/easy_access/cash_account.aspx

    http://www.coventrybuildingsociety.co.uk/savings-and-investments/Easy-Access/CallSave-MoneyManager/CallSave-MoneyManager.aspx

Personally the Coventry account is the best one, it used to have a debit card, but they withdrew it for new customers as it was to poplar, it has a form of faster payments to (next day payments)
    For everthing else there's mastercard.

  • That's great, so I would receive an account number and sort code to give to an employer?

Could anything potentially stop this like any other accounts? Just really worried you see I just want to get myself on the straight and narrow :)

According to this Barclays even accept undischarged bankrupts, so I'm not sure why they refused you.

Almost all other providers will offer basic accounts unless there are fraud markers on your credit report and/or with a fraud prevention agency.

So my guess, and that's all it is, is that they're all having trouble identifying you through the normal 'automatic' channels. Can you think of a reason for this?...moved house recently, not on electoral roll, etc?

Do you have any financial associates with a poor credit history/history of fraud etc?

well you are best to check all 3 of your credit files from the 3 providers, get the paper ones as they are the cheapest or get the free trials

You would indeed get the sort code and account number

Best to go to a branch with the IDs they might require rather then trying to do it online

That way its sorted there and then and you can move on

Your credit history or what ever is on it will not effect the opening of the accounts i have listed above
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.
  • The only thing I messed up on is saying to three when I was 16 I was 2 years older, and when I was 18, I just renewed my contract without even remembering.

This behaviour may well have flagged a fraud marker on your account, which would explain why Barclays did not give you an account.

As in the link from YorkshireBoy, Barclays will accept anyone for their basic bank account, so it is concerning that you have been refused.

Go to the Experian, Equifax and Callcredit websites. Pay £2 to get hold of your credit reports. Check them to see if there's a CIFAS (fraud) marker on there.

Sign up free to noodle.co.uk it's for Callcredit, not the most used but the quickest one to get hold of and doesn't cost anything.
    Bad luck breeds bad luck.

    Damn I'm doomed.
