in Cutting tax
Hi
Can anyone help me work out what my Tax code means please?
I am sure I am paying too much tax.
I started work in November after being on incapacity benefit for a long period of time.
I estimated between April and November I had about £3500 in benefits, I am not sure exactly, but what I do know is that I did not use my £8000 tax allowance, and so I should ot be paying 20% tax on my earnings between Novemeber and this April especially as I am on £6.19 per hour and work 36 hours per week - I am not high income.
My wage slips say OT M1 - does anyone know what this means? i tried to google it and the answer I got says that it is used for people who have used all their tax allowance, but I canot have used all my allowance being on benefits!
Can anyone help me understand this? I have tried calling about it but just end up sitting in a line for ages so I am going to have to write but it would be useful if anyone can tell me what it is before I write so I can ask why this has been done.
Thanks !

OT Month 1 code is the tax code an employer would use if you have not handed in a P45 nor completed a P46. Have you had a P45 or completed a P46?0

Hi there - did you fill in a P46 form when you started with your employer in November?

better to phone HMRC either first thing in the morning or early evening0
