Some things you could check -

Does the old PC connect to Internet when wired to the router - is basic Windows networking is functioning?
Check USB adaptor s/w installed - is the dongle recognised when it's plugged in
Temporarily disable any firewall on the PC and try again
Check if your router has encryption and apply the key to the PC
Check if your router as MAC filtering and add the PC's MAC address to the list
Check the logs on the router to see if it's noticing any connection attemps

Thing is it is picking up other peoples connections that live near me but i must be doing something wrong as nomatter what i do i cannot get it working.i put the ssid in and the encryption password in but nothing is working.

amcluesent when you say add the pc's Mac address do you mean the dongle as it is already in my router.

i have also put the dongles software in properly before i plugged in the dongle as it says in the instructions.

i thought all i had to do was install the software of the dongle plug it in and put the routers ssid name and the encryption password in for it to connect.

albertross i use the wpa encryption and when i try to connect the netgear's software just keeps trying to find a connection. if i were to plug the dongle into my laptop it works straight away so i dont know why it isnt working with my desktop pc.

When you install the dongle software, there is an option to let windows manage the wireless, try this instead of the netgear software. uninstall and reinstall the wg111? software.

If you are unable to see your ssid when you scan for networks, make sure it is set to be broadcast on the router http://192.168.0.1 admin password wireless settings, and ideally change the ssid to something random that doesn't identify you, then do a scan on the PC for wireless networks.
