Xmas Saver!
Hello There,

I won a iPhone 5 Black 16GB in a competition. It has arrived today & has come with a Vodafone Sim Card Pack. Does this mean it's locked to Vodaphone?

If not how do I tell if it is locked to company?

Thank You

A sim free phone from Applestores will remain sim free. A payg iphone will lock to the network of the first sim card you put in

  • All network provided phones are actually network free until the sim is put in it at which point it locks to the network of the sim you put in. Apple provided ones are network free and remain so.

The process to unlock an iphone properly (rather than jailbreaking) is simply the network informing apple to unlock it, next time you sync with iTunes its unlocked. Some have said instore apple staff can occasionally be convinced to do the process too

This is how it was explained to me - Only the applestores ( retail and online ) sell sim free unlocked iphones. They have a database of the unlocked phones they sell and they remain unlocked.

All iphones are the same and not network branded so when they are sold by the networks on payg or contract they lock to the network.

Its apple that lock and unlock iphones not the networks - when you request your iphone unlock a request is sent to apple by the network and your iphone is unlocked.

just to add a query to this thread once you get an iphone unlocked officially via your network/apple

once you insert you next sim, would the phone be locked to the sim then

or would any other sim still work in it
