800 Job Losses at Honda

Honda is planning to cut 800 jobs at its Swindon plant, blaming weak demand across Europe.
It is the first time the Japanese carmaker has cut jobs in the UK since it began manufacturing there in 1992.
The Swindon plant, which produces the Civic, Jazz and CR-V models, employs 3,500 people, having added 500 to the workforce a year ago.
Honda has begun a 90-day consultation period on the job cuts and says it hopes to avoid compulsory redundancies.
"Sustained conditions of low demand in European markets make it necessary to realign Honda's business structure," the company said in a statement.
It added that demand for cars in Europe had fallen by one million in the past year.

Interesting how this ties into the Increase in Car registration news last week hilighted on this forum.

Honda have a flexible workforce and extremely flexible working patterns to accommodated peaks and troughs in demand so either they have badly mis-forecast or things are bleaker than expected.

Peugeot sales are also way down so perhaps time for a peoples wagon.

  • It could well be that many people are opting for the cheaper Far East alternatives such as Hyundai and Kia who have apparantly upped their game over the past few years. Honda's reputation was built on reliability and for that you are expected to pay a small premium so maybe these cheaper alternatives which now look more up to date and are reliable are eating into Honda's share of the market.
Well that and the fact that demand is down in general.

I tend to agree and made the self same remark about Korean imports and German too at the top end..

  • I think the key phrase is "having added 500 jobs a year ago". Their forward planning is all up the creek.

Top of the range Civic comes in at £30k now, yep £30k for a small family hatchback with some bells and whistles, Kia definetly taking market share from Honda.

Yes I saw that, hence my forecasting remark. Strange because IIRC Honda have been on and off their flexible work program for a few years, why take on such a large increase?

It will be interesting to find out how extra workers are recruited....as its common for agencies to be involved in numbers of even 500.
Agencies pay a different rate to official workers...full time employment and even part time isn't the same as a decade ago....one of the reasons the welfare system is under strain.
Nobody mentions the PPI claims that are floating around for milions of people...maybe this is where we are seeing an increase in private vehicle sales...3 grand to blow for many punters..
  • UK car sales up.

    Europe car sales down.

And as we export most of our cars to Europe, due to carmakers locating much of their manufacturing for the EU here, that means job losses here in the UK.

Just another reminder of why the health of Europe is important to us all.

Of course, it could be much, much worse.

If we left Europe, all those jobs producing cars for the EU would go, not just some of them.

Jag/Landrover seem to have no problem exporting all over the world.

    Scaremongering nonsense.

So Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, JLR and Ford (engines) etc are just going to sit back and close their factories at huge expense, without a fight, because a few nutcase Europhile politicians in Europe are allowed to impose large duties on UK imports overnight out of pique ?

Seem to remember Ford used to make a lot of cars in the UK before we joined the EEC or whatever it was then.
