IMHO, Maglites may be 20 years old but they are still the best. I've owned and used God knows how many cheap torches in the past, but now wouldn't give any other make house room. My brother bought our Mum a Duracell Voyager, which has very good reviews, but its cr*p compared to a Maglite.
However, I can concur with your comment about "heftiness". Some US police carry the really big ones instead of their traditional "night sticks", because they are less confrontational, but equally effective! The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

6D Maglite all the way!!
Better still get a LED bulb for it, and its even brighter and whiter still
I collect shiney things - maglite is very hard to beat.
Another thing a taxi driver once told me was - he got a good telling off by the police for a 'metal bar' in his car, and now carries around a rather hefty maglite and has not been bothered since. Obviously for when he breaks down0 -
