there are tonnes of Torches around and the Mag technology is at least 20 years behind what is best, only thing I can see them giving advantage is for their 'Heftiness' if you know what I mean.

IMHO, Maglites may be 20 years old but they are still the best. I've owned and used God knows how many cheap torches in the past, but now wouldn't give any other make house room. My brother bought our Mum a Duracell Voyager, which has very good reviews, but its cr*p compared to a Maglite.

However, I can concur with your comment about "heftiness". Some US police carry the really big ones instead of their traditional "night sticks", because they are less confrontational, but equally effective!

Getting them back through the airport luggage X-ray machines could be interesting, though.

    6D Maglite all the way!!

Better still get a LED bulb for it, and its even brighter and whiter still

I collect shiney things - maglite is very hard to beat.

Another thing a taxi driver once told me was - he got a good telling off by the police for a 'metal bar' in his car, and now carries around a rather hefty maglite and has not been bothered since. Obviously for when he breaks down ;)
