Moritified - Barlcays have closed my account

Options
I called and they said following further internal checks they close it but couldnt say anything else!!

I opened an current account end of December.
Transfered around £200.
Was about to set up DD's etc when I got a letter this morning saying my account has been closed, I have until the 19th Jan.

I went to the cash machine to withdraw my money but it swallowed by card, I guess I can just go in with ID and get it?
Do they have to refund the £7.50 (tech pack)
Bad luck breeds bad luck.

Damn I'm doomed.

You maybe mortified, however the Barclays have probably done some extra checks on you and discovered something they don't like and have decided to withdraw your account, which they are perfectly entitled to do.

They don't have to give back the £7.50 for the tech pack as that is what you signed up for, however a call to Barclays customer service and they may return the fee.

As the cash machine has swallowed your card I would pop into a branch with photographic ID, and ask if you can withdraw all the money currently in your account.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

Thanks. I called and got the £7.50 refunded and need to go into the bank to withdraw the money.

I know they are entitled to close it but IMO they should be clear why, I have no defaults or late payments. Oh well that's is life.

  • Could be anything - worth checking that you haven't ended up on one of the national fraud registers (or been confused with someone on one) as that's a common reason to close an account like that.
  • Do you think it's worth writting a letter of complaint to barclays to see if I can get further information?

According to their T&C's they have to give two month notice unless they say I have gave false information/illegal activity/abusive behaviour/putting the bank in a position to break the law.

On the letter it said "the way I have been conduction my account" I just opened it so no conduct was done apart from I put in £200 and on the phone they said I dont meet there criteria.

  • No, all online. I answered some questions in relation to my credit report for ID verification I believe. Then was sent a debit card and my online details etc. I had sent my signature by post and thats the only contact I had. I was just about to arrange for my salary and DD's to be transfered, thankfully never got that far.

I can only think they must have information regarding fraud or something so a bit worried about that (not that I have committed fraud lol). Least If I write to them they might reveal more information.

I suspect if you complain, they'll just repeat the "don't meet our criteria" formula. And obviously for security they won't say what their criteria are.

I would get your cash out and move on.

lol got my cash out however I want to vent :) So will send them a letter, they never gave me 2 months notice and "not meeting there criteria" is not one of their exceptions.

  • If you truly believe you have supplied 100% accurate information to open this account take it further by firstly checking your credit reports.

If you know you've been economical with the truth (lied) on your application then accept the inevitable, but be very careful because if you reapply elsewhere giving more different details your application will be picked up by National Hunter and CIFAS and you'lll be marked for fraudulent applications!
