Mandy,
I've been to Port de Soller twice with my wife and loved it. It's got plenty going on, but in quite a relaxed way. If you don't just want to sit on the beach you can get a tram into Soller, and then the old train down into Palma for a day out.
Both times we've stayed at the Esplendido - its pricey, but lovely.

I second the above! (There are cheaper hotels there also).Normal people worry me.0

Yes I love Port de Soller too -well known holiday firm starting with 'Th' and ending 'son' use a hotel there with the best sea view in townNothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

Port Soller, and Soller, a few miles up the hill, linked by a tram, are a great choice. If you're feeling adventurous there are coastal and mountain walks, or easier walks through farmland from Soller. And if you're not up for that, you can take a charming rattling little train from Soller, through beautiful scenery an hour or so to the island's capital, Palma. Do it as a day trip and explore the old town and its cathedral, bars and restaurants.0

If you want a beach holiday - the beach is not very good, but the resort is lovely for adults lots of restaurants and lots of beautiful scenery my children would not go on the beach - they tried but its lots of rocks.Titch0

Hi Mandy,
If you're looking for a beach holiday, suitable places are few and far between along the mountainous west coast. Port de Soller does have two small beaches inside the bay and the main beach is being extended. As everyone has said, it's a beautiful area with lots to see and do. Further down the coast is the little town of Sant Elm, which has larger, natural beaches to offer, while nearby Port d'Andratx is busy and upmarket with virtually no beach. Nearby Camp de Mar and Peguera have really large beaches, but both get busy at times.
If beach is not a priority, there are plenty of lovely places to stay along the coast with both sea and mountain views - try browsing at the www(dot)MyDestination(dot)com(slash)Mallorca(slash)Accommodation webpage. (Apologies for the dot and slash - this forum won't let me post a link) Replace them with the appropriate characters, scroll down to the box headed "Find Accommodation by" and select West Coast" in the Where box, and you'll get a selection of possibilities to consider.
Hope you have a great holiday in Mallorca!
