    Avoid part worn

    Too many issues
  • Don't risk part worn tyres! Put your safety first. As the only part of a vehicle in direct contact with the road, tyres play a vital role in braking, acceleration, steering, and cornering. Even part worn tyres that appear in good condition may have suffered serious damage or deterioration in quality. You do not know their history, so the may have hidden faults with the potential to drastically reduce their useful life or affect your safety.

Usually you wouldn't see a tyre’s condition before it is fitted. To inspect a tyre properly, it needs to be off the wheel rim. Of course there is no chance to check condition when tyres are purchased from the likes of eBay.

The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations Act 1994 was introduced to prevent the sale of substandard tyres that could contribute to road traffic accidents. It specified that tyres must meet certain standards relating to the condition of the rubber and the tread depth, as well as being clearly marked as part-worn. The Act also made it obligatory for sellers of part worn tyres to provide their name and registration number on products.
Unfortunately, investigations from various industry bodies, and road safety groups show that some outlets are continuing to fit part-worn tyres that are unfit for purpose.

Please do not risk part worn tyres. Its not only risky but a false economy as they will wear out much quicker than new tyres.

Buy the best tyres you can afford, they are the only contact between your car and the road.
  • See here for an example of tyre reviews, which ranks the tyres from premium to budget. Google other reviews too if you want.

Not that I've ever used them, but there is a safety mark for quality part worn tyres, it's wrong to just slate them all as dangerous, they make good use of an old product. I wouldn't fit them to an Imprezza or anything but they'd be fine for 90% of journeys most people make.
Funkydaddio - if you'd mentioned where you are or what car they're for, it might be useful (!) but I would always recomment Gilnahirk tyres in Dundonald. Can be very busy though.

You are buying part worn tyres every time you buy a used car - and you don't get a chance to inspect the inside of them. My local part worn place lets you check them as much as you like before he fits them, inside and out.
  • Hi Folks, thanks for the replies, its a 2005 Focus, R15 or 175 rings a bell from last time, cant get out to car at the min to give exact details..travel about 11,000 per year.. Thanks again :)
  • Just checked, gonna need full set :(
  • Another vote for Gilnahirk Tyres. Used them for a Focus ourselves. Competitively priced and they'll be honest about whether each tyre really needs to be replaced.
