Best water filter

Evening all,

I'm thinking about buying a water filter as the water where we live is so hard and we go through kettles like nobodys business even though I descale them regularly as they end up looking skanky...... There are so many out there I am totally confused. Are Brita the best or are there others just as good?? I see Sainsbury has a special offer on the Elemaris one and the filters are also half price at present.

What's your opinion, buy or not and if buy which one??

Thanks for reading and for any opinions you offer

I have a Brita 3 way tap, and they figured if we could afford the tap we could afford to pay lots for the filters, anyway, having got the tap, I gave my Brita Jug to an friend, along with Aqua Optima Evolve filters, which are available in a 60 day size. Friend says no different to the Brita ones in terms of taste, though obviously the 30 day timer is redundant, or can be pressed twice, or write the install date somewhere near the jug.

Argos have this at the moment

    Check for better prices

Amazon have sold the filters for £20 on offer

    Hi Santer,

thanks for that, think I'll get one from Argos as they are cheaper than Amazon at the moment. To be honest I've never had one before and it was a bit of a minefield. Might get a new kettle too whilst I'm at it!!

    Hi boo,

If you're signed in to HotUKDeals go to the custom settings under HUKD Tools and API near the bottom of the page of their website, add to tags the words Brita, you'll be sent regular updates to your email inbox as soon as someone posts an offer on there if you're interested in further Brita offers i.e. Brita filters.

You can opt out of HotUKDeals group email alerts if you don't require these (see where it says Receive Email/RSS Alerts).

You can also track prices on Amazon using camelcamelcamel.

An alternative to Brita is Aqua Optima, try searching HotUKDeals to see what's on offer. Aqua Optima are cheaper than Brita though aren't as yet recyclable if that's an issue.

Do you use white vinegar to descale? I do as the worst scenario is a vinegary tasting cuppa, as opposed to who knows what if using kettle descalers, not to mention you can re-use the vinegar and it is a lot cheaper.

Just thinking that the Evolve filters will fit a Brita Jug but not sure if a Brita filter will fit an evolve jug

However, the Evolve filters seem to be cheaper more often than the Brita filters

For the kettle, I got one of these, you can put 1.7 litres of finely filtered water in, in one go, but it only boils enough for one cup, which saves me trying to guess how much to put in a kettle, and a lot of trips to the tap.

There are a few different makes.

Amazon have it for £45 at the moment

Incidentally, Aqua Optima filters won't fit Brita jugs, so may not be much good if you've purchased a Brita one.

For descaling I use Kilrock-K multi-purpose descaler, can be purchased at Robert Dyas though might be found cheaper elsewhere as well. You could try searching Google Product Search. For me Robert Dyas is more convenient plus I can use my Love2shop vouchers at Robert Dyas as well.

Make sure you rinse the kettle well after using any descaler.

Alternative, as mentioned by santer, use vinegar. You can get rid of lime deposits in a kettle by adding 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar to the water and letting it sit overnight. If more drastic action is needed, boil full-strength white distilled vinegar in the kettle a few minutes, let cool and rinse with plain water.

White vinegar is great for descaling shower heads as well. Boil the vinegar in a pan and sit the shower head in the vinegar overnight. This softens the limescale and makes it easier to clean it off.

Thanks all for your posts. I've bought an Aqua Optima Filter from Argos so will see how we go with that. You've all been really helpful.
