My DS's share a bedroom and have a bunk bed but now DS1 is at uni I would like to get rid of it and get DS2 a normal single bed. I don't want to get a pull out bed as Hoovering will be a pain then, but could I put DS1 up on a Z bed during uni holidays or would 6 weeks on one give him a back ache?

Oh my goodness, is my age showing?! Sorry, it a folding bed - they used to fold up like a Z, hence the name!0 -
The mattresses are awfully thin on them, have you given any thought to a trundle bed that could be stored under the single? https://www.tesco.com/direct/carly-underbed-trundle/208-6708.prd and just keep his current mattress. oops just read you don't want an under bed, Sorry0

How about a good quality inflatable, with an integral electric pump? I have friends in walk-up flats who use these all the time.

He'll end up with terrible back pain sleeping on a Z-bed for weeks at a time. They're only designed for the odd overnight stay really.

PS I must be showing my age as well - I know what a Z-bed is:D0 -

My mum did something similar when I went off to uni. I would just caution that it does send quite a strong (and potentially hurtful) message to the child that there is no longer a place for them in the family home. Very few kids going off to uni are living in their student accommodation 52 weeks a year and in fact this often isn't even possible.
But on the question asked, z beds aren't very wide and aren't very comfortable so after 6 weeks he would be sleep deprived miserable and yes quite possibly very stiff and sore. My experience of blow up beds is that they are hot and sweaty in long term use. Would a sofa bed somewhere in the house be an option? Or just keeping the bunks if you really don't want a trundle?0 -
I spent a year sleeping on a zed bed when I was a penniless student. They are much more comfortable than an air bed. I'm not a small bloke either.0

I would keep the bunks or get a trundle bed.
Z beds are horrible to sleep on unless you are 5! Then they are fun.0 -

Tbh the bunk beds aren't workable anymore with DS1 rolling in drunk at 3am and shaking the thing trying to get in!
I might be able to fit a single futon/sofa bed in the room, but not sure if they are much better than a Z bed?0
