Bit Complicated Catalogue Account Stuff

Firstly I know I was stupid, so please don't berate me over it, but sometimes your heart overrules your head.

Around 18 months ago my mother had to leave her rental property and move into an unfurnished one. She had pretty much nothing in the way of furniture, appliances or anything really, all she had was a few clothes.

I live 100s of miles away so although I suggested she get 2nd hand stuff from somewhere she insisted she had no means of transporting anything to the new property. She asked me if I would sign up for a catalogue credit account so she could get the basics and pay them off gradually. I reluctantly agreed and a month or so later changed the account ownership into her name (I did this online) and to her address.

Sadly due to various reasons my mother and I no longer speak nor have contact details, I am worried however that she may have fallen back into her old habits of not paying the bills. OH and I have a mortgage offer on place due to be drawn down in March and I'm terrified something will go on my credit report if she hasn't been paying.

I should say that this credit agreement is nowhere to be seen on my credit report, and hasn't been for many months, so hopefully it's now moved to hers.

Can anyone tell me, if she hasn't been paying, will the company look back in their records and pursue the original account holder (me) or is it her responsibility now it's in her name?

I'm sorry that was convoluted!

Thank you.

Did this credit account definitely used to appear on your credit file? But has gone entirely?

I have never heard of being able to change a credit agreement in to someone's elses account online. I'm amazed its possible as it would simply allow people to pass their debts on to random innocent people.

Have you checked your credit report with all 3 main agencies to ensure the account doesn't appear on any of them?

Yes it used to be there. The old search is there from when I applied but not the actual account anymore.

I believe you can't change online anymore but I was able to back then. I think some companies were just more careful of it than others as I know you couldn't do it with Next but with this one you could although not any more. I've checked Experian and Equifax and it's not on either of them.

Maybe its worth a call just to check whether you hold an account, Just act dull and see what they say, if they say you do just ask the balance, at least you will know 100% whether you are still accounted for on that account :)
