Bipolar and trying to find work!

  • OP, I think you have a great attitude.

You also have to look after yourself, I have several health issues which means I cant work nights and have to work part time and it sucks but its something I have to deal with as I dont want to make myself ill.

I agree with other posters doing some more education will help in the long run, and you can contact your local college and ask to speak to their disability team who will be able to help you.

Also, remember, you are only 18 and technically your have around another 47 years to work, dont be in a rush and think what do you want to do and how can you get there. At 18 employers wont expect you to have oodles of experience they will expect a good work attitude (that you have) and any other experience is a bonus.

Good Luck, I am sure you will make an excellent employee.
  • Hey, I know that it is very frustrating when you can't work due to mental illness, and it's awesome that you are trying so hard to make it happen.

The posters that have recommended volunteering are probably spot on - if you get involved with some volunteering for some of your time (leaving enough time to keep looking for a job) you'll get great experience, references and it might help build your confidence that you ca manage a commitment like that.

There are obviously lots of charity shops etc, but if you wanted to try something a bit different Google "do-it volunteering" (I don't think I can post links yet). That site lists loads of different and really cool volunteering opportunities that you might enjoy and that would give you some new experience that you don't already have. :)
  • Thanks a lot for all your replies.

When it comes to going back to education, I have attempted this route. I was halfway through my BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners (Level 3) and was gaining a couple of distinctions, but I overworked myself and that led to me dropping out, and going back to hospital.

I've definitely considered going back to college again now I'm more able, but I'm pretty sure you can't receive Job Seeker's allowance whilst in full time education, and even though I'm 18 I have a few living costs that the JSA just about covers.

As for voluntary work...that's an option for me and I'm keeping my eye open for any opportunities that arise. It's a better route for me than going back to education due to the fact I'd still be eligible for JSA. So I'll keep looking for some voluntary work. I've done some in the past (such as fundraising for the alzheimer's society, and I actually really enjoyed that.

All your replies have been brilliant - I'm certain 90% of the advice I've got from them will help me in the future.

On a slightly more positive note, I got a call from Currys today. I applied for a position on the 12th December but they apparently had a block on recruitment. Though today he called and asked if I could go in for about 15 minutes tomorrow for an interview. I'm a bit worried about how it's going to go but I'm in with a chance.
