    The future is getting closer!

Cambridgeshire County Council to build 2.5MW solar carport

The project is being developed by Cambridgeshire County Council alongside Bouygues E&S Solutions and will include both battery storage and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. It will be located at Babraham Park and Ride in Great Shelford Parish.

The electricity generated through the solar will be used to provide the energy for all onsite needs, including for the EV chargers as well as CCTV, although the majority of it will be sold to a third party. The revenue from that sale will be used to support the continued delivery of frontline services.

An additional 160 parking spaces are also to be incorporated into the plans.

Cambridgeshire County Council has already completed several energy projects, including a 12MW solar array at Triangle Farm, as well as having developed a school’s energy programme.

East coast, lat 51.97. 8.26kw SSE, 23° pitch + 0.59kw WSW vertical. Nissan Leaf plus Zappi charger and 2 x ASHP's. Givenergy 8.2 & 9.5 kWh batts, 2 x 3 kW ac inverters. Indra V2H . CoCharger Host, Interest in Ripple Energy & Abundance.

Sounds like a bigger version of the hub in Dundee.

Yup, when it comes to renewables it seems that where Scotland lead England follows. ;)
I hadn't quite appreciated just how many Hydro schemes sprung up there in the early twentieth century. Apparently to generate electricity in an economical manner and power their many industries, Whisky being but one, when it was deemed uneconomic to extend the grid to isolated areas!
When I last looked they've been over 300 approved, although not all built, ranging in scale from a single kWh to 600000kWh.
    Isn't life an education!

Community Energy across the pond creating stabilised, clean energy costs for a 25 year period. The total, if expanded from 6GW to 7.5GW by 2030, would save the state of Pennsylvania $619 million/year!  Whats not to like. Tax breaks excluded of course! :)

University of Pennsylvania signs 220 MW PPA with Community Energy for state’s largest PV project

The University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1740, signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the creation of a 220 MW solar project that is expected to be the largest solar power project in the Commonwealth. The project developer is Pennsylvania-based Community Energy.

Until now, the largest solar array in the state was a 70 MW solar array being developed by Lightsource BP on a total of 500 acres rented from seven Franklin County farm owners announced last year.

The 220 MW project (across two sites and contracts) brings the University closer to its goal of a 100% carbon neutral campus by 2042 and the state closer to the 6 GW solar goals of advocates like Pennsylvania’s solar trade association, PASEIA.

Pennsylvania would save $619 million a year in wholesale power costs, and would lower the costs to the multi-state PJM Interconnection region by $3 billion a year if 7.5 GW of solar was installed by 2030, according to a study commissioned by Community Energy from PowerGEM

What a forward thinking Council Cambridge has been, which can only be applauded and encouraged. I wish them every success.
If only one of the councils local to us followed a similar path instead of "investing" in commercial property funds. Doh!

Cambridgeshire County Council plans for 29MW solar development

Cambridgeshire County Council is looking to build a 29MW solar farm, adding another development to its portfolio.

The Northam Angle Solar Farm in Soham would be located just south of the Council’s existing 12MW Triangle solar farm. Triangle – which started generating in late 2016 - has delivered over £350,000 per annum net revenue to support Council services such as adult social care, it said.

Cambridgeshire County Council has been a staunch supporter of solar, announcing this month plans for a 2.5MW solar carport with battery storage located at Babraham Park and Ride in Great Shelford Parish.

It has also developed a school’s energy scheme, investing £11 million into 55 schools across its county, and unveiled plans for two solar-plus-storage projects on existing landfill sites in January 2019.

Possibly the same fund listed a few days ago although now swelled to nearly double the amount!

£195,000 in community solar benefit funds to go towards local COVID-19 response

Six community-run solar farms have advanced £195,000 in community benefit funds, with the money to go towards supporting their local communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The solar farms are those that have all received investment from and are supported by Community Owned Renewable Energy Partners (CORE).

Solar glass that's 17% efficient is a pleasant surprise, and whilst it may take ten years to fully materialise, that's not that long, especially if incorporated in new builds of office blocks, flats etc..

Solar Window Technology Takes A Leap Forward In Australia

A dream of clean energy advocates is turning every window into a solar panel. Just imagine how much solar electricity could be generated around the world if all the windows in factories and office towers helped to power the buildings they were installed in. Researchers in Australia are hot on the trail of a new technology that could make solar windows a reality.

Their work with semi-transparent perovskite solar cells has resulted in new technology that permits a conversion factor — the ratio of how much sunlight is transformed into electricity — of 17%. Before you dismiss that as too low to be of interest, keep in mind that many solar panels available today have a conversion factor of between 15 and 20% and aren’t transparent. ClearVue, a solar window technology company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, boasts a conversion factor of just 3.3%.
