Big plans for PV in Ireland.

Danish PV player plans 500MW Irish solar surge
Danish photovoltaic outfit Obton is to invest €300m in the Irish solar industry to develop up to 500MW of new projects.

The company will spend the cash over the next five years alongside local partner Shannon Energy.

Over 1000 jobs will be created during the construction of the projects on some 2000 acres of land.

A story that pops up every so often, is the combination of PV and farming land, and that by accepting a loss of performance (from max) for both, you can get 60% more out of the land - 80% from PV and and 80% from farming, raising potential to 160% v's 100% from single use.

Extract from this week's Carbon Commentary newsletter:

7, Perovskite. Research groups around the world are struggling to demonstrate the durability of solar cells using perovskites. (The word ‘perovskite’ refers to the structure of a molecule, not a specific chemical compound). One European agency gave details of the results of testing of cells, showing highly impressive results after exposure to heat, humidity and temperature variation. This will have cheered investors in perovskite start-ups. (Thanks to Gage Williams). Another study, from highly regarded researcher Peidong Yang at UC Berkeley, demonstrated for the first time that the molecular shapes of perovskite compounds are very sensitive to temperature changes, partly explaining why they tend to be unstable when working as solar cells.

Not cheap but I suspect good value in the long term.

I believe it's a no brainer for a new build.

Solar in the US is unbelievably expensive - I understand it is all to do with payments to their version of DNOs?
    I think....

hadn't thought of this but it makes great sense, the potential to increase current pv farm capacity, in the world, by replacing some of the panels with far more powerful modern panels as they get cheaper. i wonder if we'll see a second hand market for the old panels

PV 'repowering potential to hit 67GW'
The market for repowering existing solar plants will take off in the 2020s as the global install base for solar ages.

Wood Mackenzie analyst Lindsay Cherry said: “The repowering of solar systems allows for production of more electricity while using existing land, interconnection points and other infrastructure, leading to a lower LCOE.

“From 2020-2030, the potential market for solar repowering sites that have reached 20 years of operation could hit 67GWdc cumulatively.
