I have 2 rock hard Avacados, and want to mke an avacado salad using 1 of them, this evening. I have been putting 1 of the avacados into the fruit bown with an over ripe banana (as i have heard this is the best way to ripen it), but its brey made any difference!
Has anyone got any better ways please?

Hi- I have heard that putting them in a brown paper bag helps as does putting them on a sunny windowsill! I watch mine like a hawk. I hate buying them when they are over ripe so have to cut into them at a judicious moment!0

Thanks Janb,
i have tried that today, so fingers crossed.
As for a sunny window sill, not possible at this time of the year unfortunately.0 -
They can be really tricky to ripen quickly......I once needed one for an evening meal on New Year's Day. I sat the avocado on the kitchen dresser on Dec 30th (still rock hard), put it in the spare bedroom over a radiator on the 31st (still rock hard!) & in despair, I walked around with it actually down my bra all day on the 1st (which included lunch out & a winter walk.....) and guess what? STILL rock hard!! Since then, if I can't get a ripe one in the shop, I generally decided to make something else! Although, if I don't want them for a specific meal, I'll buy them hard & just leave them for however long it takes.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

I am quite good at putting them in the fridge to stall their ripening if needed, but no tricks for ripening them quicker, although I have heard of the banana one. I expect it takes a few days to work as isn't it to do with gas being released and why you shouldn't have bananas in with ripe fruit that you don't want to ripen further?
Cooking doesn't help by the way, I tried that.
Something else tonight and avocado next week?0 -

Either go and buy some soft ones or change the menu for tonight.
There's no way to ripen a hard avocado in a day.0 -

Putting an avocado in a paper bag with a banana (or apple) does work to speed up the ripening process, but it won't happen in a day. It takes 2-3 days at least.
As above, the only way you can make anything tonight with avocado is to go and buy a ready ripe one.No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -
You'll never do it in one day, but for future reference, wrap them in newspaper and place in a dark cupboard and check them every day.

Has anyone tried this? I suspect it makes the avocado soft rather than properly ripened but it might do if you really need one for a recipe.0
