Maternity Leave / Tax

Hi

I am currently in my 4th month of maternity leave from teaching. Before I left on maternity leave in September I was earning into the 40% tax bracket. I think that due to my current cut in pay, my salary from April 2012 to April 2013 will fall below that tax bracket. Do I need to claim tax back, or will I get it automatically? I think I am making the correct assumption that the tax I have already paid this year has been under the belief I will be earning my full salary which I am not. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks and happy new year to everyone.

If work are still paying you (SSP or enhanced) this should sort itself out, check your pay slips they shoud show you the monthly ans cumulative tax/NI.

If you are PAYE and your tax code is a cumulative one, it should happen automatically, you will see a refund under the tax bit on your payroll instead of a deduction. However, when you get your P60, you can check that the deductions are correct and claim a refund, if one is due.
