Want to pay but we're not getting a response

Options
We’ve had a problem with our current account (the thread’s on the Banking & Current Accounts board, if you get really bored one day) but, in a nutshell, we now live in Central Africa, and our bank stopped paying our 3 direct debits in January 2007.

We’ve managed to contact 2 of the dd recipients and these are now back on track, but there is one that we have written to, (a loan that we took out in early 2005) who have not yet answered our letters. In the first letter we explained the situation and that we were arranging another bank account, at which time we would clear the arrears and continue with a direct debit. We couldn’t give their account number as the details of our loan with them were inadvertenly left behind in storage in UK, but we gave many other details, i.e. full name, current address, address at the time the loan was taken out, date loan started, card number etc, also gave them our email address and asked them to confirm receipt of the letter. Knew it could take a month or so for a snail mail response to arrive back, but we didn't receive a reply.

About a month later, with another bank account ready, we wrote to them again, referred to our first letter, and requested a new direct debit mandate so that we could clear the arrears and continue the payment schedule. However, we still have not received a reply. I'm can understand that one letter may go astray or to the wrong section but surely not two!

We have just sent another letter asking them again to either email or write back. Can anyone give me a suggestion how we might get them to respond? (That is, other than the phone - due to the bank account problem, we’ve had to make several phone calls to UK corporations, and when I’m paying over £1 a minute, I don’t want to spend >5 minutes listening to piped music!).
I'm sure they want their money, and I want to finish the repayments

  • Thought about sending it by email, but the letter we sent them contained lots of personal details including our bank card numbers which we thought might help identify us in the absence of our account number. (The lender was a bank as well and they gave us a bank account with the loan - which we haven't used - hence the card numbers). Worth mailing them now though, without the personal details, to see if they can track our last two letters in their system.

Can you get access to Skype or one of the other internet telephony services where you are? It might make it much cheaper to just call them!
