Hi,

I left home (parents) two years ago and Im still on the electoral role there, im currently renting. If I want to apply for credit, will I have to get it changed? I've applied for things in the past and just used my parents address and its been fine but as I want a loan, im guessing I may have to get it changed.

If I have to do it, what is the quickest way and how long does it take to do?

Also can you be registered to my parents and my current rented place?

You need to be registered on electoral roll at current address otherwise it will not match....you need to contact your local council and it can take up to 8 to 12 weeks for all credit reference agencies to update their records. No, you cannot be registered at 2 different addresses at same time.

Just go to the website of your local council and search for 'electoral register'. You'll probably be able to register online. Have you not received forms at your current address? If you get it sorted next week, you should be on the register for 1st February but it may not show up that quickly for credit agencies.

You can only stay on the register at your parent's house if you spend 6 months of the year there - see http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/faq/voting-and-registration/i-have-two-homes.-can-i-register-to-vote-at-both-addresses

    You can't vote twice though!

Not twice in the same election. You have to choose. I don't know how likely you are to be caught though

You can be registered at more than one address although I doubt it is legal.

I was registered at my parents for years even though I was registered where I actually lived although I never voted at my parents house.
I have numerous qualifications in Business and Finance, Accountancy, Health and Safety and am now studying Law.

Don't rely on anything I write as it may be wrong!!!

I went on the aboutmyvote(dot)co(dot)uk website and it makes a form for you, it add the request to get your name taken off previous addresses so I'll just do it.

Thanks again everyone, if its going to take a couple months for it to register with experian etc then I may rent for a couple months.

If they are different local councils then they are not the same election.

Chances of being caught are close to zero though.
  • To clarify, you can be on more than one electoral register at the same time.

You can not vote more than once at a general election, but if there are parliamentary by elections in the areas for which you are registered, you could vote in those, even if they are on the same day.

You can vote in the local elections of any area for which you are registered.

It is NOT illegal to do any of the above, and it is NOT illegal to be on the electoral register more than once in any given period.
