worst cook ever

Options
I've been cooking from scratch for about four months. I always pick recipes that are quite simple but it always turned out wrong. I get recipes from all recipes and a good house keeping book. Even bread out of the bread machine tastes wrong.

I've just made a lemon cheesecake. I got the right sizes cake tin. Did the biscuit base and it only covered half the cake tin.

I'm also starting a. Sewing course on Tuesday to be more crafty. I'm hoping that sewing comes more naturally.

Sorry rant over
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

  • Your not the only one!

I cant stand the fact, I can spend hours on what sounds like a great meal / dish and its still wrong.
I have become better but just doing everything from taste. Like now i make my own verisons of:- chilli, spag bowl, ect.

Maybe we should just learn to live with the fact we're rubbish cooks? lol

I used to think I was an OK cook , then one day I managed to burn boiled eggs!

I'm absolutely terrible. The stuff I make tastes alright but I get very very stressed when cooking and something always, always goes wrong. Normally quantities. I don't know why but when it says it should make so much, it never ever does.

  • I have found that a lot of recipes don't get across just how long you need to beat something, or what texture a mixture should be to begin with. I find that if I've seen it on a programme I can replicate the recipe more easily.

The thing is before you started cooking that you were probably eating processed foods which means too much salt, sugar and artificial flavours, your taste-buds are in distress. :(

You need to make sure you use plenty salt and other flavours when you first start making from fresh and gradually reduce the amount you use. ;)

The other common mistake made by new cooks is to assume that simple foods = low level skills, the opposite is true. Believe it or not eggs are one of the most difficult things for a chef to cook properly!

Dishes such as chilli con carne, soups or spag bol are probably easier than scrambled eggs on toast.

Persevere and gradually build up your skills.

PS the secret of being a great cook is not getting it right first time, but learning how to sort things out when it goes wrong.

Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food book taught me to cook, definitely worth buying or borrowing one if you can, I found it really easy to follow and we still use the recipes now. I was really really terrible but have greatly improved with a few years experience 😊
