I'm just sorting my meal plan for next week. I've never attempted a chilli con carne before so I'm giving it ago.the recipe states 300 ml of red wine. I don't buy red wine. Is there something else I could use instead?
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

You can make it without, I don't bother (tried it once with a bottle of red I was given and didn't like the flavour anyway). Or if you wanted to buy a bottle for the purpose, bear in mind that wine can be frozen - into ice cube trays/bags makes for easy portioning for future recipes.

I have never used wine in my chilli, ever
I do occasionally use a tin of ministrone soup depending on who is going to be eating it.0 -
I don't put wine in my chilli, either. I like them hot, so it'd probably be lost anyway
I always add beef stock though - so maybe try substituting that for the wine / other liquid?0 -
Hi
Never heard of red wine in chilli. I stir in a couple of square of plain chocolate before serving. Tastes even better the following day.Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -

I'ver never put wine in chilli. It's fine without. In some meaty recipes which call for red wine, I have sometimes used a couple of teaspoons of red wine vinegar which i've always got in as I do lots of preserving. That seems to work, but chilli has lots of flavour, so you will probably find you don't need to use it.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

Mine has beer in it, and I can definitely taste the difference if it's not there. When I use a new recipe, I follow it to the letter, so I can then guage whether or not I want or need to make and changes next time.
Maybe buy a bottle this once?******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0 -

I've never used red wine before.
Usually it's a mixture of tomato puree, worcestershire sauce and some marmite or beef stock cube disolved in hot water. Have been known to swill out tomato or brown sauce bottle or chutney jar to use up the dregs too.0 -
Hi,
I don't make chille as I don't like red kidney beans. However, I oftern leave certain things out of recipes if I havn't got something or wouldn't use most of the item and its always fine. The red wine wouldn't be a problem in this house though
You can usually guess whats okay to leave out, as Thriftlady (used to post here) once said, 'you can't leave strawberries out of a strawberry pavalova and expect to get strawberry pavalova' or something along those lines. But a chilli will still be a chilli as long as you don't leave out the chilli bitI'm sure you get the idea.
