You may well have to get a replacement viewing card from Sky though.
ETA:
I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £25. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400. http://www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/faq/#3
No, the OP will receive Freesat From Sky (a different platform to Freesat). No new viewing card is necessary, the old one will continue to work.
Alternatively you can sell the equipment on ebay, or give it away on freegle, whatever you wish.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
does not help though when you want to sit and watch a program as its being shown
Why not watch it a few minutes behind and then fast forward through the ads.?0 -
The two minutes adds are a perfect opportunity to make a cup of tea have a pee or simply rest your eyes.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0

We ditched sky 2 years ago, managed at first with free to air from sky, then bought a Humax, I tend to pause it ,go make a drink or whatever, then you can whizz through till you catch up live.Do I need it or just want it.0

i did a little experiment where by i recorded one of those police stop programs, within a space of an hours viewing slot allowed for thiis program , i counted
TWENTY SIX ADVERTS
ALSO FOR THE SKY BASIC PACKAGE WHICH I WAS PAYING FOR I COULD GET MOST OF THE CHANNELS FOR FREE ON FREE VIEW
I'm no expert but I think you'll still get the adverts on freeview.0 -
Thats the reason Sky + was invented, wizz though the ads.
Which is why advertiser dont pay hardly anything to advertise
Which is why Sky need to run more adverts, adverts, adverts
Advertising fund 90% of TV broadcasts
The day VM/Sky start compulsory advertising (disable skipping of adverts) is the day that advertising revenue go thru the roof
I dont like adverts - but i need time to make a cuppa and a price I would be prepared to pay for decent TVWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -
Thank you all for your replies.0

I too just skip through them, rarely do we watch anything live.
However there are far too many too often and they go on for too long.
It's easy enough to pause the TV to go for a brew/pee etc.
Still, I wont cancel sky because I watch a lot of programs on skys channels that I cannot get elsewhere I.E. sky1, Sky Atlantic etc.0 -
There is a whole season (7 I think) of House in the Sky On Demand library atm, and no adverts! Downloding atmThat gum you like is coming back in style.0
