Royal Mail - MPs voice concerns on privatisation moves....

A cross-party group of MPs has called on the UK Government to guarantee that any moves to privatise Royal Mail would not mean the end of standard postal charges throughout the country.
Royal Mail could be sold off in 2013, prompting fears people in rural and remote areas could end up having to pay more for deliveries.
Has Electronic Mail forced this issue to be discussed?

The rise in the cost of small packages / parcels sent by Royal Mail over this past twelve months has certainly been noticeable. I have been finding it difficult to sell items on Ebay because of this increase. This must reflect a lower volume with a bigger nett profit.
Amazon use private companies for many of their deliveries and if you are prepared to wait a few days the service is 'free'0 -
There seems to be no specific reason why the price of delivery of mail or parcels ought to be independant of the costs.
It should be a straightforward commercial decision.0 -

Commercial delivery firms charge a standard delivery price for all mainland UK. They presumably do that for commercial reasons - why should it be any different for the PO?
There is we are told a boom in sales over the internet. If the PO can't think of a way of grabbing some of the resulting business then the sooner it is privatised the better. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. well for one, when will people start calling Royal Mail by its name, and not Post Office
As for pricing
get your cheapest courier price
Remember and select one that charges a flat rate for the whole of the UK
get RM to charge that on each of the say 80 million items a day(including downstream access mail)
chaching!
so is that your plan in a nutshell?0 -
It will be a disaster for the consumer like all privatisations of monopolies and cartels have been.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Totally agree. Yet another utility consigned to "the business bandits( and their government accomplices) who have wrecked our economy and are trying to blame it on us" Micheal Moore (10 years ago)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
