Thought it might be useful if we had a general 'growing' thread so we can record our endeavours, successes, failures and our general doings in our gardens/allotments/greenhouses/polytunnels etc...as well as us having a thread to have a good chinwag too!
Today i eventually got around to putting my onion sets into modules and sowing a tray of broad beans! Anyone else started sowing anything yet?
I have decided that i want to use as much of the available growing space as possible this year and hope to grow lots of flowers for cutting. Flowers have never really been a growing interest to me, but i loved making up bunches of homegrown flowers for the house and to give away last year. Definitely want to make a more concerted effort where non edibles are concerned. Also they might cheer me if we have another pants veg growing year!:)

Sowed onions a couple of weeks ago, and repotted the first of those today.
Sowed peppers a month ago and first ones are up and will be repotted soon.
Sowed toms [only a few earlies] last week.
Sowed more onions, beetroots [2 varieties] and celeriac, plus 2 varieites of celery and parcel today.
Will be sowing my chillis and peppers from next week onwards, a few each week.
The indoors shuffle pretty much starts now!
And sowed about 30 types of flowers 2 weeks ago. All in the greenhouse at the community garden. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
I would love to sow winter broad beans but they just don't work on our lottie.
I've made a list of seeds which I have got and following my diary from last year with what worked and what didn't. I can sow on windowsills from February onwards.
I really can't wait. :j0 -

Happy new year everyone, here's to a good growing year
I sowed some garlic and broadies out during November. First time I've tried over-wintering broad beans so fingers crossed, but so far they they seem to be doing ok. I want to get my chillies started off soon.

Been making a few plans after the Christmas rush, got a big box of seeds-many unopened. So decided going to try not buying much if any seeds this year, I often get free packs of seeds or stuff on offer and OH picks packs up when on offer, so we always seem to have too many.
Mind you last year I tried using up old seeds and had so many toms germinating I had to give plants away and compost some as well lol.
Been out this morning mixing some HM seed compost-using well rotten chicken "stuff" from the coop-so poop/shavings/straw rotted down on a heap with some garden waste-very rich, and some old compost from last year for structure. Going to try some seeds in this and see what happens-if no good will get some shop compost later on.
So going to get a few early toms in just for fun, probably just bush ones and some onion seeds. Also want to get chillis and peppers started.
Been looking at some designs online for homemade self watering pots made from pop bottles as well as bottle stacking gardens-again made from empty bottles. Started saving bottles/plastic tubs and toilet roll inards as well. Yay feels like things are really starting.

We have been working hard down the lottie since 1st Jan. As we only had a postage stamp size plot we were allowed to take on a half plot on Friday. OH has been like a mad man digging it!!! Had been just scratched for many years, no digging at all, so he is finding it hard going. My plot is almost dug over, planted manure in top half and made a new bed for root veg at the bottom. Would like to get last bit done before the weather changes, a guy says 16th Jan. will be freezing here, how very specific. Getting the manure from the top of allotments to my plot nearly finished me off and I wont be doing that again. If I cant get it closer to my plot I will go back to getting it free from the farmer and bagging it myself. Full load cost me £30 and I was told it is 50 barrows, doesn't sound too bad but pushing a fully loaded barrow over wet muddy land for miles is carp. Have done 17 barrows and back is killing me now. Just hope the veggies are going to be great this year.0
