Credit check - Will Natwest 'sell' on details?

Hello everyone, I wish you good evening.

I am after some advice on Loans, I will lay down some outlining information then I will elaborate on the question in the title;

Not so long ago, a friend of mine went on to Experian and got his credit report. A week later he was being hassled by long forgotten debts he acquired when he was younger.

Now, I have a couple of debts that I have managed to 'evade' from when I was younger, it is a complicated situation for both debts and I believe I was right not to pay for both of them.

Debt 1; Halifax made a mistake that landed me in £1,200+ debt from bank charges (over the course of 6-7 months). I was young, scared and unsure where to turn for help... So I ignored it, I then ended up with debt collection agency letters etc.

Debt 2; Vodafone changed a phone contract I had with them without my consent and didn't contact me, the resulting change removed the whole reason I got the contract (unlimited mobile internet) and introduced a fair use policy (limit) of 500mb, I was charged £30 extra one month for exceeding my internet usage which I thought was unlimited, this was when I realised they had changed my contract... I refused to pay and cancelled the direct debit. I didn't hear from them within the 3 months I was still at my first address.

I have since moved house and these incidents occurred around 3-4 years ago.

Now my question is; During my credit check will Natwest (or Experian) sell my details on? Like what happened to my friend, or will I remain in the dark?

Many thanks for your time,
Ryan

Short answer, YES! If they can make money off the back of your information, they will!

The more important question is do you have any links form the address you had the debts last at to the address you are currently at? or more so, the addresses that will end up on your application form? as Experian will link these together.

Anyone after you will then be able to locate your current address, remember Experian and the CRA's actually provide services that notify companies that such an event has happened and a pile of crap will start coming through your door. Also NEVER give Experian or any CRA's a REAL/CURRENT telephone contact number, they will pass that on to your creditors as well!!!

    Hello Mr. Force,

"The more important question is do you have any links form the address you had the debts last at to the address you are currently at? or more so, the addresses that will end up on your application form? as Experian will link these together."

What kind of links? I haven't lived there for 3 years.

I have had 2 phone contracts and 2 bouts of car insurance all registered to my current address. Surely I was credit checked for these? I am 100% I was for the phone contracts as I had to pay £1 for the the check (which they refunded when complete). So surely if there were any ties I would have been bothered by the debtors after these checks? Is a loan check the same?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

Give it another 10-15 years before applying for credit and you should be OK by then :)

You have now stated that it has been over 3 years since you lived at your last address, lenders normally ask for last 3 years address history so if that is the case then no linking of address will occur since you only need to provide your current address.

The £1 check is surely to check your payment card is good,...
Did you have to provide your previous address when you applied for the mobile phone contracts?
Did you move any accounts from your old address to your new?

The debts will be statute barred after 6 years, after then it doesn't matter as much...

    Mr. Force,

For my phone contracts, I am 100% sure I did not supply my bad address if they did ask as I believed I need not complicate matters, this is the same with my bank account, after the issues with Halifax I opened a new account with Natwest and denied everything they asked me i.e CCJ's previous addresses ladeda and that was 4 years ago now.

I think I'll just ask my father to get the loan out and I'll pay him monthly for it.

Isit a possibility I have 2 records? One for my old address and one for my new one?

    Thanks,
    Ryan.

If you moved an account from your old address to you new address you will be linked there so it will show even if you don't supply it. Searching your file won't alert lenders, they will already know where you live if they're chasing you.

Not all phone contracts go for a credit check - more usually an ID check only.

The reasoning for this is more folk have phone defaults than any other, invariably due to tariff or minimum term issues - do they are not interested in defaults they (or their competing networks) may ave placed on file.

So potentially you haven't linked your addresses, I can't see applying for a loan will be an issue then, don't know if you will get it mind.

It is a possibility that you have information at an address which may not be linked at the CRA to your current address, so I maight view that as having more than one record.

If you want to check on your records (actually for CCJ purposes) without alerting the CRA's then do a search at registry trust online on your previous address, it costs £4 and will let you know whether a creditor has sought a CCJ in the last 6 years.

Ahh I see, so as not to link addresses during the application I'll just credit the search the bad address as if I live there? Will it also show other addresses if they are linked?

    Thanks,
    Ryan
  • If you have lived at your present address for the last 3 years then that is the only address that they will ask for on the application. No linked address will occur as a result of you applying for a loan.

Also, if you apply for your credit file and put down your old address, the CRA's will link your addresses for you.
