Running shoes - how much should I spend?

Options
I'm looking into buying a pair of proper running shoes. Over the summer I was running round the local reservoir, but now the nights have closed in I'm running on the roads and as such I'm thinking of investing in a decent pair of trainers. I know I'll probably end up paying full retail price as I'll be going to the local running shop, but how much will I be looking at paying. I run 5k 3-4 times a week and 10k once at weekends. Don't want to spend a fortune but I do want a decent pair that will last.

  • I would say around £50 - £60 but go to a reputable sports shop who will look at your style / gait of walking and select the best shoes for you.

I have really low arches (didn't know it at the time) but when I went for a proper fit they recommended a pair with more padding where it was needed.
  • I agree - go to a shop where they will fit you properly. My local running shop actually put you on a treadmill and watch you run in the trainers before you buy them. When i started running regularly I purchased a pair of asics - cost me £70 five years ago. I run 3 times a week - 2 short interval runs and one longer run (around 4.5miles). When i ran the Great South last year I decided to treat myself to a new pair of trainers (had bought the asics for my first attempt at the Great South in 2007). I got some new balance trainers from the same shop - around £90. Not cheap but i think its important to protect your joints with decent shoes and if this pair last me for 5 years i'll feel that's good value for money

Thanks for the advice. I took a trip to Sweatshop in Chorley and they measured my feet and suggested 5 different pairs of trainers. I eventually went for a pair of Ascis which were on half price and after buying the telegraph with a £10 voucher in it I paid £60. Went for a run in them yesterday afternoon and was very pleased to managed a PB over my 4 mile route.

Nice one OP. I definitely recommend spending more on good quality running shoes. When I first started running I wore 'normal' trainers and ended up pulling a ligament in my foot and couldn't run for over 6 weeks.

I now spend about £75 on my running shoes from Bourne Sports in Stoke on Trent, they have the treadmill to measure your gait and are really helpful.
