Good evening all, does anyone here use a mini oven? We have a large fan assisted gas oven but I get cross when my DD switches the oven on to cook a veggie or bean burger and was wondering if a small oven would be more cost effective?

I use a mini oven and think it's great but there's only one of me. Pretty much the only thing I can't use it for is large loaves, though small ones and rolls are fine in the mini. Half a pizza, cheese on toast, cakes, everything else is fine too. If roasts are your thing, it wouldn't take a turkey or large chicken, but pieces are fine obviously.
Tbh, burgers etc would be best cooked under a grill anyway, not a big oven surely where they'd dry out.
If you decide to get one, check the sizes as they vary - I've got a dear little one for my campervan but a bigger one in the kitchen.0 -
I have a diddy one like this which also can be used just as a grill. It has done me fine, my gas is a bit temperamental so having this is a lot more reliable. It is okay to clean (put down a liner on the base straight away) and easy to use. You do need to have pans and tins that will go in there, the very large ones won't - one tray and one grill shelf supplied.
I haven't checked how much electric I have actually used, and I can only use it an hour at a time before re-setting the 60 minute timer. However if it broke now I would definitely replace it. If my gas oven went I wouldn't rush to do anything until the hob went as well.
btw have you considered a remoska?Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
We have one that someone gave us about 6 months ago and we think it's brilliant! I would definitely replace it if it broke down. We are a family of 4, it's great either as an oven or a grill for all sorts of foods. I mostly just use my main oven now for roasts, or anything that won't fit in the mini oven. It was great at Christmas as extra oven space, warming mince pies etc. HTH0

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far. I am struggling to find any information on the cost effectiveness of running a mini oven compared to a full size oven that is fan assisted.
Does anyone have any idea? I can get a new Hinari mini oven for £10 so don't want to miss out if it is going to save me money0 -
I have a vague idea that it is something to do with wattage - but how that compares to a gas oven is beyond me! What wattage is the fan oven? The diddy mini oven I have is 1200W. I also sort of think vaguely that if you are heating up a smaller area then the cost of electric would be less, but I could be wrong. Also my little oven's door doesn't fit so well.
Could you borrow a mini oven, then get one of those meter thingies that tell you how much you are using in real time and run one for half an hour at a particular favourite temperature and then try it with the other at the same temperature for the same time. I would volunteer to run my diddy one but I don't have one of those meter thingies and all sorts of stuff is on at the moment here.
I shall watch with interest, please update if you find out. Also do you think anyone in the 'in my home' section would know how to work it out?Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
I hear that they are good and I nearly bought one myself but as I have a slow cooker, combi microwave and a halogen oven. I manage. But for a single person with few visitors and no family a mini-oven would probably do someone quite well. As could a hot plate.
Does this help?

I don't have a mini oven but I do have a remoska that I bought several years ago and I noticed that I use it far more than turning on the big oven as its excellent for cooking and reheating stuff. Its a bit of an investment I know but I think over the past three years I have recouped the cost simply by lower electric bills.0

I have a normal gas oven and a mini electric oven. I tend to cook my joints in a slow cooker (browning in a fry pan first to seal and make look more attractive lol). I use the main oven for bread (if not using BM) and roast pots and parsnips as we are family 4 and little oven to small for that. I use mini oven for rolls, part bake stuff, muffins for school lunches etc. I couldnt tell you how much it costs to do this way of cooking but I do know as Im on a prepay meter this has become alot more cost effective over the month cooking in this manner. I would highly recommend it.0

I too cannot recommend one highly enough. I love the easy clean part too.0 -
Our gas oven in our rented house has a caputted thermostat and doesn't warm above about gas 2. As far as the LL is concerned it works as it lights and stays on.. I have found the replacement thermostat is gonna cost £70 plus the pain of pulling the cooker out of its very tight gap in a postage size kitchen to fix it so was looking at one of these.
Could anyone tell me if their internal tray measurements as to if i would be able to fit in a 12 case bun tray?0
