Now please mind I asked for everything best available. Turion 64 X2 TL56 (1.8GHz, 512K) is the latest amd processor available for laptop in UK. RAM , HDD , Graphic Card everything the best.
    This was quoted as 529.
I know many of you will be saying that this is no where near to 329. Agree but one of my friend did some googling and he found 64 bit laptoip with 1gb (and guess 80 gb hdd) an acer brand for 300ish.
Please note that apart from hdd and ram you can't upgrade your laptop easily.
I am not denying that OP's finding is a good one but all I am saying that you can get similar or better if you spend some time.
Everyone has different needs. For example I know that Dell's 90 days CAr (1 year warranty though) is good enough for me.
in £329 you must be getting 1 year CAR or similar. As far as config is concern you can get better config for similar money. I used only Dell laptops (and saw Sony laptop of my friends) Not sure about other brands.
Although everyone's need is different and OP's post is a good finding, I suggest to go for latest config if someone can. I am sure even the config I mentioned above will be obsolete in another 18 months. VISTA and longhorn are in infancy stage, it will make a huge impact once they picks up.(people argue on this but time will).
Also my suggestion is do not ignore graphic card spec whilst considering your laptop.
    Cheers
  • I will ask my friend about the 300 pound deal of laptop. however I am sure it was turion tl52. I guess Turion is dual core processor and better than sempron. (I need to confirm this)
  • Further to my post
Please find comparison between various amd processor for laptop
    http://www.amd.com/gb-uk/Processors/ComputingSolutions/0,,30_288_13239_13253,00.html
I am sure my friend find a deal containing dual core for £300
I agree with one of the post that with sempron this price is not a mistake.
    sorry for a rude comment.

can you give me a system you would recommend.. price... spec etc.. as I want to end up with best I can for my money

I am thinking u know of a better deal and if you do how come you didn't point us to it.. after it is about saving us money and getting best deal

I would suggest you to go for the one I mentioned above. Everyone's need is different but the needs change with time. If you have one of the best in reasonable price you don't have to worry for next 2 years.
As suggested by someone above you can consider going for 512 ram and but 2 gb from ebuyer and replace it. however not everyone can do this and it might be costly.
If you want I can pm you the sales rep's contact details(as posting here would be against forum's regulations)
I read in some other post that in 1501 series sales reps and not giving any more discount however this guy was willing to give me a good discount.

I agree with you that their Indian call centre is nightmare sometimes. Even I had an issue earlier. However I think it is still worth if you save some money. If you find someone difficult just dc the phone and call again. like we do with telewest or other mobile companies.

Remember Dell is a mailorder company. Indian call center is a way to cut the cost and they pass some (not all) share of it to us.

With PCworld price you pay includes their high street rent etc.

Unfortunately my contact person is from India call centre. I am Indian by birth and perhaps thats why I was able to get a better discount. He has promised me that he will give same discount to my other friends and one of my friend is buying from him.

I will PM you his contact details in another 5 minutes call him and tell him that you are after the spec and quote given to Swami
I suggest you ask him to send you quote in mail. get it consult with your friend and order it. You can even try to call another sales rep to see if he can beat the quote.
    Cheers

    Dipsy,

I would avoid buying the laptop suggested by jswaminathanuk as you can get the same laptop for same price from Dell's website but with Vista as the one suggested came with XP. So jsaminathanuk is talking rubbish, there is no discount from the Dell salesman.

Or you can get it for £468 including vat and delivery by going through the small business section http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&oc=N04153a

You don't have to be a business to order http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61208

A good place to check out all the dell offers is http://www.dmxdimension.com/

Or if you don't mind one that has a scratch on the lid you could try Dell's eBay store http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZdellfactoryoutlet

Well I forgot to mention that I wanted XP only (I have all the version of VISTA original as I am msdn member). I am planning to make it dual boot and can't install XP if VISTA is already installed.

However I just checked up the link and agree it is 545.20
Go through Quidco and you will get 5%. That will bring down by a tenner.
    every penny helps :-)

Originally it was showing 554 pound and I wanted XP thats whjy I called dell

Thanks for pointing this out I will ask my other friend to use this link.

    Rubbish!

It's a piece of cake to dual boot XP on a pc that comes preinstalled with Vista, I would expect an MSDN member to know that.

    http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

Or you can just use an unattended XP script to get XP to install itself, program files and common files into different directories from Vista. if you don't have orginal Vista media to restore the bootsector, you can use Diskprobe which is downloadable from Microsofts website.
