Amazon.com voucher on Amazon.co.uk

Hi All
I was given a $100 voucher from Amazon.com for Christmas from a relative who lives in the Cayman Islands. I thought that as Amazon was a global company this wouldn't be a problem. However, it seems I can't spend it on Amazon.co.uk which is really annoying. I thought Amazon'd just convert the $ to £ and send me the stuff. Unfortunately they won't take the voucher at all. So I went on Amazon.com and found most of the stuff and added it to the basket. Most of it costs more and the shipping is expensive then I'll have to pay customs duty on it. That's even if they'll ship the stuff to the UK at all. So I thought I'd go back to Amazon.co.uk and use the Amazon.com voucher to buy an Amazon.co.uk voucher but you can't use a voucher to buy a voucher. It was a really generous gift and I don't want the embarrassment of going back to the person who gave it to me and say "Sorry, I can't use it". I don't know anyone in the US well enough to ask them to take delivery of an item and then send it on to me so I'm a bit stuck. Does anyone know a way of getting round this?
I'm sure this will have been asked here before but I'm not really familiar with this forum and can't find it so I apologise now for silly questions.
Cheers

Only suggestion I have is to sell it on ebay. I would have thought there'd be plenty of international buyers that will want it...0

I would definitely tell the person that sent it, they might do the same thing again.!!0

I had the same problem with my daughter in the US but luckily she lives there so i`ve had the stuff sent to her address , kept the stuff i ordered lightweight cos of postage.
I nearly got caught out the first time i was ordering a gift card to her , but i emailed amazon first , but my daughter did`nt realise .
I think its a stupid rule !
ps: i`d tell the person as well x0 -
You should be able to register the gift as an account credit and use it bit by bit rather than all at once. If the order is less than £18 it wouldn't attract customs fees. This may be a bit hit and miss anyhow, I've had packages over this amount without customs noticing.
I'd be surprised if things like dvd's were more expensive, even factoring in delivery costs. You should be able to play these on a multi region enabled player and most players have this capacity, google your player type and something like multi region for more details of how to re-programme. Likewise cd's which were commonly cheaper.
As previous posters have said I'd certainly mention it to the originator, no way would that sound ungrateful and might save further hassle.0 -
Just to add, you can`t even use the voucher up on downloads for books , music etc if your in another country0
