What to do with rabbit/GP dirty bedding?

Options
Hi all, we have a few rabbits and guinea pigs and I was wondering what you do with the dirty stuff. I try and compost some of it but there's so much of it and OH is beginning to moan about taking it to the tip because it makes the car stink. Any ideas?

I do compost but only have 2 rabbits, hamster and chickens. Otherwise I put in black bags and the bin men take any I cant fit in composters. I have loads tho dotted around the garden and spread it between them lol
  • Good question. I cleaned out the 5 pigs today and have bags of the stuff for the tip again tomorrow. I can't stand the smell in the car either and it lingers. Urgh! I generate way too much to be able to compost it each time and think the tip is the only other option. Shall follow this thread with excitement in case someone can suggest an alternative.... :-)

When I had piggies (2 of them), some waste went on the compost, and the rest went in the brown bin for garden and food waste. I can't remember it smelling particularly...

  • No its doesn't. Until it's in black bags. In the back of the car. Some sort of chemical reaction
  • Offer it up on freecycle to allotmenters - they'd come and collect I'm sure.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I saw someone advertise it on freecycle recently, for others to use on allotments. i remember thinking what a good idea. i always take all of mine and put it on the allotment compost, but not every allotment holder keeps rabbits and it makes it easier to get the right brown/green mix. x

edit, great minds think alike SN x

    Yup, find some allotment owners!

The only other OS use for bunny poops I read is an odd one... apparently they make good food for pond fish!

I tried this and no takers - advertised at 2 sets of allotments, saying I'd leave it in black bags by my front wall weekly - still no takers
I ended up composting it all myself and my garden loved it

If you use newspaper under woodchips the paper can be shaken off and dried when its sunny (!) and out into recycling - when I had piggies I used to put one folded newspaper on top of the main newspaper at their favourite potty spot and change that more often than the main newspaper

  • Hi, thanks for your replies. I think I will make a larger compost heap and also try freecycle. We've got four rabbits and lots of guineas, so there's quite a bit of mess.
