Im not one to point fingers :)

....but a significant number cheque books seem to go missing, aka tea leafed in the "security of the post" and end up with fraudsters. Its ideal for them as they can cash cheques from cheque books that are yet to arrive/be stopped. Unsurprisingly they know the threshold at which banks start to scrutinise cheques and keep under it.

This happened to me a couple of years ago, but my bank credited my account immediately after one phonecall.

The Royal Mail and its employees have a lot to answer for.

I work for (a very small) bank - a proportion of cheques drawn have their signature checked.

All cheques over a certain amount are looked at by a human, for signatures and technicalities (eg words and figures differ). The amount varies from time to time, and is lower than you might think. Of course, I can't say what the amount is.
