Random mix of leftovers

Hi, I have 1kg of cooked ham, 2 parsnips, 3 carrots, 2 swedes and loads of sprouts left from Christmas. Can I chuck it all in a pan together and get a reasonable stew, or will I need to do the root veg first and add the sprouts and ham later? Or is it worth buying a bag of value carrots to add to the mix?

I'd cook the root veg for a little while before adding the sprouts and ham.

That lot could also make a nice pie - cook it up, add a tin of condensed soup and put it in/under pastry. I did something similar with my leftovers, it was yummy. Similar mix but included leftover duck and roasties, no swede.

I think your stew would be very sweet and the spouts could make it bitter, not a good mix of tastes. I think with this collection I would be tempted to cut the root veg into julienne and quarter the sprouts, cut the ham up into small pieces and just stir fry the lot in a little sesame oil with garlic and spring-onion or add a drop of 5 spice and soy sauce.
  • why not serve ham cold with a mash made up of the veg (not sprouts) serve them separate.

Thanks! I can't cook in a pie cos I'm dieting, and mum works outside so I need something hot.

So, I will leave out the sprouts (lil sis doesn't like them anyway), cook the root veg (with a few more carrots) until nearly cooked, then add the ham. And clues on how much water to cook the veg in?

Also, I have found some leeks, so will try to find something I can cook with leeks and sprouts - maybe some sort of soup.

Make leek and potato soup, and stir fry the sprouts or lightly boil/steam and mix with mashed potato to make bubble and squeak to eat with the ham!
