Flaky scalp help

Hi, I've been suffering from an itchy flaky scalp for a couple of months now. I've tried Vosene and t-gel and they aren't helping, any other ideas?

Try rubbing some oil on to your scalp where it is dry and flaky. I know it sounds odd, but try it! Olive oil from your kitchen would probably do the job.

Make sure you wash, rinse and repeat thoroughly. Otherwise your hair will feel pretty gross afterwords.

I think you need to work out what your flakes 'are' to help decide how to treat yours. Scalps can flake due to dandruff, psoriasis or dermatitis. They are all seperate conditions. Maybe have a read on the net to see which you may have.

In any case, you need a gentle shampoo to cleanse your scalp and clear the flakes. Avoid high street drugstore brands (like head and shoulders etc) which are full of irritants. Spend a bit more money and look at Aveda shampoos or a similar brand. It's perhaps not in the spirit of money saving to buy an expensive shampoo, but i personally think its worth it to treat your scalp well and avoid the irritation you are experiencing.

Also consider - have you started using any new hair products that might be irritating your scalp? Or any new medications? Food intolerances can also cause skin and scalp conditions.

Diet is also important - plenty of water and fruit and veg. Sounds basic but you need a good diet to have healthy skin and hair.

    Hope this helps
  • Some people swear by The Body Shop ginger shampoo. It's worth a try. But as already said if nothing works maybe a trip to GP?

The shampoo I've recommended is safe whatever your condition - at least it says it is.

A close relative had the same problem and someone recommended I buy her soak 'n' float from lush. It's made her scalp stop itching, her hair shiny and soft, and intensified her natural colour.

    Hope this helps!

  • It is possible that you're allergic to SLS (sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate). It might be worth trying either the Boots Naked shampoos or the Body Shop rainforest ones - body shop will give you a sample if you explain you have an allergy. Though that said, their shampoo left my hair very lifeless but at least my scalp didn't break out. Both are relatively inexpensive in any case.

But I'd second the advice to see your doctor just in case.
  • Eucerin shampoo is brilliant, cleared my scalp and I use it once a week to keep it clear.
  • I have found this really helpful with my irritated and itchy scalp.

  • Agree with belfastgirl23. SLS is a foaming agent which can be found in many daily household products such as soap, shampoo, shower gel etc. Liz Earle (I purchase them online) has a SLS free shampoo. Or Organix (can get hold of in larger boots or online). The Bodyshops rainforest range are all SLS free.
