Hello!
I've been lurking in the OS section for a while, but this is my first post.
Since moving house last year I've been incredibly stingy with the heating and have vowed not to order anymore heating oil than what was in the tank when we moved in. We have an open fire with a back boiler which is brilliant (will hopefully we upgraded to a stove this year).
We desperately need a new front door and some windows. Both are currently wooden, and although our windows are doubleglazed there is a noticabe draft coming through them. We're hoping to get a new front door in the next month or two, but it's quite likely that the windows are going to have to wait a while to get replaced.
We currently have curtains up but they're not that great. Just the cheapst pair I could find online a few years ago.
Does anybody have any advice on the best place to buy curtains please?
Our charity shops don't tend to have many in and I need to get new ones quite soon. I'd be happy to make them myself, but wouldn't have a clue where to start and haven't got a sewing machine or the time just now. I would like the warmest ones possible and am happy to pay for quality as long as it's reasonable value.
Any tips much appreciated!

There's a thread on here about lining your curtains with cheap fleece throws. I'll see if I can find it...

In the winter I get my spare curtains out of the cupboard and double up, hanging one set on the top of another. I have poles in the front room so use plastic shower curtain loops to hang them. For other curtains with rails I use bent paper clips to hang onto the existing hooks. Maybe you could try that if you have spare curtains.

No spare curtains anywhere I'm afraid, Ilona. Thanks for the lnk Arbroath Lass, they look absolutely brilliant but being realistic I really don't think I'm capable of making them, will keep reading!

Beckky for a quick and effective solution buy fleece throws (inexpensive in the market/Wilko's) and tack or even just pin them to the top of your curtains, it will make a noticeable difference to the room temperature. Since reading about it on the forums I have my heating down to 15c in the winter and it's plenty. hth0
