I do mine for 6-8 hours in the slow cooker - with red wine/port and stock, onions and carrots, plus a bay leaf. Once its falling apart I fish out the meat, reduce the gravy, sprinkle a bit of stilton over it and top with hm all butter flaky pastry.

For a more authentic pub pie replace the wine with beer and don't bother with the stilton

Advocate of the slow cooker here too........ I usually bung steak (stewing, braising... Whatever) onions, mushrooms, carrots in, cover with half a pint of real ale, make up beef stock with water and use top up until all stuff is covered. Cook while at work (so for me this is usually from 7 till about 5), come home, thicken gravy if necessary, put into pie dish (use slotted spoon to fish out meat, leave gravy to serve with) top with pastry, cook in oven till done. Serve with potatoes and veg with gravy from SC poured over. Lush!!

I do mine overnight in the slow cooker and it flakes apart :j

DON'T add cornflour or you will get that "English" light brown gravy
