MSE News: Halifax & Lloyds customers can't get cash on New Years Eve

  • I should report Lloyds agreed to pay the excess £80 that I had to pay for my season ticket.
  • I have contacted Halifax and they say I am not entitled to any compension for the loss in Road tax (VED) I made due to being unable to purchase my new car on the 31st Jan. Had I posted my old car tax on the 31/12/2012 the garage told me I would get a full months refund, but due to not being able to then collect my car until the 2/1/2013 I could not post away for my refund.

It was embarrassing being stood in a garage in front of sales staff and customers with my card saying declined over 6 six times between 4:45pm and 5:20pm. Especially when the bank told me the issue was resolved about 10 minutes earlier when I phoned them at just after 5pm.

Internet banking was down too at this time.

I did not have the funds for a car purchase on another bank card as some people suggest.

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this as some people suggest others are, jumping on the band wagon of people saying its terrible that they did not have access to their money. It was just a really bad time for me to have tried to buy my car. I have proof of my debit car being declined.

The bank say there is no compensation for the financial loss I have made, nor the embarrassment or emotional upset I suffered... I left the garage physically shaking after the ordeal.

What should I do? In the style of 'Little Britain', the Halifax customers services computers just said 'no' to me.

My online banking is not showing any transactions since 31 December and the balance at the top is not the same as the one in the statement however does not tally with what the balance should be, but everyone is saying the problem was fixed on Jan 1???????

Oh bless ya what a load of tripe you've posted IMO.

You left the garage physically shaking after the ordeal, well let me tell you something you need to wake up and smell the costa mate if something like this has left you shaking then I'd hate to think if more important things in life come crushing down on you.

Move on and stop acting like a baby!!

    Thanks for your support BugsyBrowne.

Maybe you buy a car every year or something, or deal with thousands of pounds on a daily basis, but not me.

Glad everyone on these forums are not like you.

The more I think about this the more I think you are really unfair with your opinion.

How dare you judge me when you know nothing about me, my finances, my personality etc?

I was only seeking advice on whether people think I should be able to get some financial compensation, mainly for loss in VED and you make it a more personal attack.

Don't worry, I'll not post seeking advice here anymore.

It should be common knowledge by now that bank systems can go down at times. The Lloyds/Halifax blip the other day was just that - a blip. Not anything like as severe as the NatWest/RBS systems meltdown a few months ago. Nonetheless, annoying.

Plenty of reason for everybody to have access to two independent payment sources. Especially if there is a chance that a an hour's outage will leave you physically shaking.

So in answer of "What should I do?": Learn from this episode. Get yourself a card (credit or debit) at an organisation independent of the Lloyds Group. And/or have enough cash on you if you go out. Or get a bankers draft for a larger purchase. And/or take a partner/friend with you if you are planning on a bigger purchase. And/or pick up your new car in the morning, not after banks close on New Year's Eve.
  • Thank you for your constructive advice.
  • All I can say is that OP would have been left standing in the banking hall even if he had gone for cash at the bank.
Sometimes these things happen - remember nobody in the UK HAS to pay for a bank account - very different abroad.
