Charge for using Debit Card

Is this still legal?
I was just in a shop, I got to the counter and produced my debit card, just to be told that there was a "25p charge for using a debit card for under £6"!

I walked out. I don't accept that. I thought it was illegal. Is it not?

Not illegal as far as i know but i know some shops charge as much as a pound for under a fiver on a debit card. But fair play on you for walking out it seems a strange amount £6 !!!!!!

I just can't abide by that kind of nonsense. It's greed, IMO.

At least they told you first. They are simply trying to recoup the charges they have to pay the card processors.
