Working hours under 18

DD is 17 and is contracted to work 4 hours a week with a major retailer.
Over Xmas she's had extra shifts and some have been 5 hour shifts but she hasn't had a break though she is allowed to leave the shop floor at will to use the loo.
As she is only 17 shouldn't she have had a 30 minute break after 4 1/2 hours?
TBH not really bothered about it but just wondered if as a parent I'm responsible for not notifying employer.
She loves her job and is paid a decent rate (£6.37 ph) so don't want to make waves.

Ask your daughter, if she is ok not having the break then don't say anything. If she isn't then get her to tell them.
Whatever you do, do not phone or talk to her manager yourself!Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -

Yes she is okay as it's not that long to work with no break, would be different if she couldn't leave shop floor for the loo, plus she has bottle of water in her locker.
I wouldn't dream of ringing on her behalf as I've spent the last year or so making her more independent in readiness for Uni and just adulthood in general.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Great to hear, you could always mention it to her but make sure she is aware of the consequences if an employer decides not to play ball (ie lost shifts etc) and explain the benefit of choosing battles carefully etcDon't trust a forum for advice. She is entitled to a 30 minute break when working over 4.5 hrs, if possible this should be in one, her employer lets her leave her job for toilet breaks so if this adds up to 30 mins ish and she likes working there then she's doing ok.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

That would be one hell of a pee:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I'm surprised that they haven't given her a break as when she asked for extra shifts leading upto Xmas they said she couldn't have any as she was under 18 and could only work 4 hours a week. DD came home, asked me, went back and they rang HR (as I told DD to ask if it was just company policy as opposed to what was legally allowed) who said as she was 17 it was okay.
I think now they've probably forgotten she isn't 18 for a few months.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

She worked 6 hours today and asked for a break and she said her manager was a bit funny about it saying that she could either have no break and be paid for 6 hours, work an extra 1/2 hour and be paid 6 hours or have 30 minute break and only be paid 5 1/2 hours. She opted for 30 minute break as her hours were 10-4 and she was hungry.

But her manager is correct here.
If she works 6 hrs then, yes, she would be entitled to a break, but it would be an unpaid break.0 -
