Jewellery valuation

I have bought my engagement ring and other gems overseas and never had them valued. Now, I'm curious about their value and would like to find a reasonably priced but good jeweller to tell me their worth. Can anyone recommend a good jeweller?

Also I'm not able to find an IRV (Institute Registered Valuer) in Northern Ireland based on [can't post link, but just google 'institute of registered valuers'). Is an IRV important for the valuation?

My diamond engagement ring came with GIA certification so should I bring the certificate to the valuer?

Can any one recommend what value of items should be valued and what not? I have rings of ruby, sapphire, emerald on 9ct gold or silver and ruby earrings with diamond.

I'm considering farmers jewellers, shannons (Lisburn) and Joseph rea. Are they good as valuer? Which is cheap but good?

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could give some advise.

Ellisons Jewellers, based in the Fountain centre on college street Belfast. They are well known for their expertise in diamond rings etc.

I’m not sure about the IRV thing but they have been on the go for years (formerly Ellison Brothers) so they should definitely be able to impart some wisdom on valuing your jewellery.

Give them a call beforehand and check about the certification, they are really nice to deal with.

    Best of luck.

We always deal with F and C Alexander on Great Victoria Street. They would give you a good idea of how to go about insurance valuations and what to include.

I have used Margaret Forbes jewellers a number of times for repairs, to buy and also to value. Always find them to be reasonable.
The valuation was suitable to be used for insurance purposes. If I remember right it's about £20 minimum charge and then a percentage of total value for written valuations.
They are just down the street from Shannon's near first trust bank. They also have a few other shops around NI.

Agreed about Margaret Forbes - very profesional & had the skills to value themselves - alot of jewellers will send away & charge for it

Following on from the Margaret Forbes recommendations they won't value jewellery that has been bought overseas so you would be better off trying the other jewellers that have been recommended on here.
