The "beta something" cream is most likely a steroid cream, so not the same as an anti-biotic.

I don't think you can buy antibiotic creams over the counter, you will need a prescription.

BTW - you shouldn't use steroid creams on the face for long, because they thin the skin.

Good news that your mole doesn't look like any of the pictures.

Ask your GP for a referral to a skin specialist. A mole which has changed or has become raised and which bleeds easily needs further investigation. Don't just accept your GP's word, unless he or she specialises in skin issues.

I had a similar issue and my GP referred me. If you do need further treatment then this should be covered by the NHS because it is not regarded as "purely cosmetic".

I 100% agree with what lessonlearned has written. I went to my docs re a mole, who said it was nothing. I went private, got sent back to my GP, who referred me to hospital and removed it the following day. Please read my sig, it contains the signs people need to look out for in terms of melanoma. Check them carefully to see if any apply to you. Please do try and get a second opinion, after all, what could be better than being told it's nothing to worry about by two different sources?

Having said that, and having had all of my moles investigated in truly minute detail:o, I have had one on my face that bleeds occasionally when I knock it. It is not a dangerous mole. It's on the side of my face and sometimes catches on the arm of my glasses. With that one I'm caught between a rock and a hard place in terms of the NHS and I think that's what your doc may think. My GP surgery does minor mole removal, but I'm told by my GP that they aren't allowed by the NHS to do ops on the face, and that the NHS (in my area anyway) won't remove moles on the face unless they are cancerous, so its save up and go private if I want it done. Try and get a second reply first though.

In terms of mole removal, there are lots of different techniques which have different levels of scarring, I've had several different methods done on me and other than wide local excision for melanoma you can't really see the others at all.
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
  • Have to agree with Viva. Surgery will not make it worse. The scar will fade away. I have 6 ops for skin cancer and the only bad scar is the wide excision. The rest you can hardly see.

I had a mole just below my mouth and to the right for years. It was fine until it sprouted three strong black hairs.

My GP said it would have to be removed privately. However, I happened to see another GP at the practice and she revered me. It was removed by laser.

I have a very small, whitish patch which is simple to cover.
