Hamper idea for someone recovering from surgery

I'm hoping that you can give me some inspiration!

A friend of mine is having knee surgery on Wednesday and knows that she will be on crutches for at least six weeks. Unfortunately she is usually very active, so I'd like to put together a hamper containing some things to keep her occupied without spending too much. I've already found some books, dvds and a jigsaw but would like to include some treats and inspirational things for when she's getting bored/frustrated.

Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks for reading:)

How about some crafting magazines, or a small cross stitch kit. Card making, or crochet? If you can trawl the garden centres some often have kits, and with all the sales on, you might find some bits at a bargain price. Hope the op goes ok, and she has a quick recovery.

after i had surgery and was discharged, i recieved a strange shaped parcel from an aunt containing several jewelry making kits. it was a nice suprise and kept me busy when i could not do much.

  • Thanks JJ. and sillyvixen, I'm loving both of those ideas :)
  • Hope your friend makes a speedy recovery.

Maybe you could include the details of the competitions board, so that she can enter a few? Or the freebies board in case there is something that interests her?

You could also google cartoons about being on crutches - there are quite a few, and if you print them out and put them into a display book, she might find them funny. You could do the same type of thing about her job or one of her interests if you think that will suit better. I did this for my sister, with cartoons about Scouting, as she is a Beaver leader, and she loved it.
  • Can I also suggest bio oil for scars (amazon, chemist direct sometimes have it reduced), and some nice perfume, makeup or nail vanish (loads of stuff in sales ATM) I know it sounds odd but as a female also, I always make an extra effort with making myself look nice if I'm injured or feeling under the weather.

I would also introduce her to pinterest if she's online, I can whittle hours away on that just reading fitness motovationals

    Hope her health improves quickly

What lovely ideas :) hope your friend recovers quickly, she's very lucky to have such a thoughtful friend as you. Some nice moisturiser would be nice hospitals have a way of drying your skin, hopefully she will have time to pamper herself after her trauma.

  • Thanks kingfisherblue - love the images book idea, hadn't thought of that. I love the pampering ideas and bio oil, thanks Cathy2702 - will add those to my shopping list as well as some nice moisturiser, thanks Nanamia.

    What a lovely idea!

A nice fleece blanket to keep her warm its amazing how chilly you get when your not as mobile as you normally are.
An ice/heat pack to help with any discomfort or swelling following surgery - was a godsend for my mum when she had her knee replacements.
A voucher for something you can do together once she is up and about (coffee on me/cinema trip etc)- will give her something to look forward to redeeming!
Homemade cakes/brownies or even meals she can freeze.

Thanks savingmummy. I've taken on board all of the advice and suggestions and having now shopped around put together a 'boredom bag' which I will deliver next week. My friend was discharged today and is now at home with her feet up!:T
